Odysee video site alternative to Youtube

A nice alternative to youtube, I thought Lbry and Odysee were two different sites but they seem to be the same?

Odysee is a new video site that CEO Jeremy Kauffman said was created to recapture some of the freedom and independence of the internet he grew up with — an internet where “anyone could speak and anyone could have a voice.”

Kauffman argued that since then, the internet has become “very corporate,” with a small number of companies controlling the flow of information. Odysee was created to provide an alternative — and eventually, more than that.

“Some would call it an alternative to YouTube,” he said. “We like to think it’s the successor.”

We need for this or something like it to be successful... But who's backbone is it on?

I am not that tech savvy but I guess your question refers to the Parler incident? If I am correct the article indicates this is a block chain so that can't happen? The excerpt below is from the article. I guess this prevents the Parler incident from happening?

“Some would call it an alternative to YouTube,” he said. “We like to think it’s the successor.”

The site was created by the team behind the Lbry (pronounced “library”) blockchain protocol. Kauffman emphasized that neither Odysee creators nor their viewers need to know anything about the technology (“blockchain is a how, it’s not a why”), but he said this approach gives those creators more direct control of their content and their audience. As Kauffman put it, “Your channel exists, effectively, in a cryptocurrency wallet that you can download.”

The Lbry website offers a few more details: “For the same reasons that nobody can prevent a Bitcoin transaction from taking place, nobody can prevent a transaction (like a publication or a tip) from appearing on the LBRY blockchain.”

The Odysee website sits on top of this protocol. While anyone could, in theory, publish anything to the Lbry blockchain, Odysee restricts content based on a handful of community guidelines that prohibit things like pornography and content that promotes violence or terrorism.

I’m a fan of anything NOT associated with Google and go out of my way to avoid anything connected to them.

Aside from that, YT has really had a lot of negative social effects - their model encourages a “race to the bottom” of sensationalism and outlandish, stupid behavior and antics. It’s like TV but 100x worse with EVERYONE an aspiring star / millionaire / self-promoter (“make sure to smash that ‘like’ button and subscribe to my channel!!!”). There’s some good content on there but you have to sift through a lot of time-wasting BS to find it... here’s hoping that maybe the others will be better and encourage more worthwhile content. And be easier to embed here.

I like the guy who created a pocket fart machine using CO2 cartridges.. And then pranks people at Walmart, Ikea, in elevators.

I can't see how blockchain is going to protect the company from having its content eliminated from servers (aws or Google)...
If I provide you storage with my company, and I choose to sever my services with you, it doesn't matter that you have BC videos... Your out... No mo storage end of story.

Wow, I hadn't seen a reference to ICQ in 20 years! I guess AIM and YIM are probably closer to 15. IRC, I still see references to, but those are usually tech guys trying to bring up the old days, not anything current.

I'm curious to see how this does and how good a job it does at managing content.

Yes, free speech is good, but at the same time, there should, I think, be limits (tricky line to walk). Murder, violence, terrorism, porn, those are the items that need to be policed, IMO.

Well that didn't last long.

I just noticed that the article I attached is from 2015, so what gives?

I just came across another site called *****ute. It seems there are a fair amount of politically charged videos on this site and may be geared toward 1A? But a few searches does show various topics from DIY auto, home, plumbing, electrical repair to guns, camping and more.

It's worth a look.
