And yeah, it's a healthy habit..... until you get run over by a bread truck :^)
I like those. Keeps me on my toes and did it until Covid. I dislike the big group rides that stop at the local coffee houses. Get out and kill each other then stop at the end for the coffee. We have a drop policy. Get drop, you are going home on your own. Our ride, The Montrose Ride, has been going on for more then 40 years. Now the young guys that are riding local crits come out, take turns up front and tries to split the pack. Burn themselves out in the 35 miles. We use to do the drawn our 60 miles hammer head ride. No too many guys on that anymore. They all turn around at the 50 mile mark.

Forget the bread truck. Few years ago, someone crossed my wheel in the rain on that ride when there was only 12 of us. Broke my collar bone and three ribs. Man, that one hurt like heck for a few days.

I did Cycle Oregon in 1995 and again in 1997. That first one was all in the N.E. Corner of the state. The second - we went from the Snake River to the Pacific. Freezing rain as we went over the cascades. Coldest descent ever after that. The Wallowa valley was pretty fun - most days were “up” for the morning, and a nice descent in the afternoon.

For a guy from flat Wisconsin - a pretty good time.

I love climbing and am more or less built for it, and seem to particularly enjoy long ones, or perhaps that’s just because I love the Rockies and that’s what you find there. My favorites are Mt. Evans and Magnolia Rd., both in the front range in CO.
