Clear Coast Oxidation S2000

A friend of mine has a Honda S2000 that has lost it's clear coat as it sits not too far from the ocean. The car is not worth that much and as she wants to sell it what are her options? Sell as is to a Ricer? The last car I got painted cost $8K (it was an Jag XKE so complex) so I have no recent experience. I was wondering if just the clear coat could be redone or is it a Maaco job? Thanks.

I think that depends on the paint condition. Once cleat coat is gone, the element then attacks the actual paint especially out by the ocean. If clear is applied on top of that, the imperfections or damage paint will read like a book. Maybe easier to just sell it off to some kid. There are lot of them who wants a cheap s2000. I jsut sold mine a few months ago to an adult and it was in great shape. Kids don't normally have that kind of money, but 7-9k available to buy a toy.

This would be my approach. If the color is gone then you throw a color coat on too. Take pictures of before, fresh paint jobs make people suspicious.

Is the clear coat actually peeling off, or just dull? It could be a layer of sea salt baked on. If peeling at all it needs to be sanded right down, I assume its a metallic colour paint? It would be worth asking a decent detailer.

If I were in the market, I'd rather get it as is and take it to the paint shop of my choice than see one that had been repainted and wonder.

I'd clean it up as good as is possible given the state of the paint and just sell it as is.

The end.

Do not drop a dime into speculation. It's a desirable car. It will sell.
