After 'boosting' a sweet 911, you now gotta get it your customer in China. Of course, you know this is a job for your armored stealth boat: :p

.

You would need a fuel tank the size of that boat to feed all those engines, unless they are just smuggling them from Hong Kong.

This makes me feel sick.

Our insurance went up when we moved from metro DC to San Antonio.

Somewhat misleading. New Orleans is in a red state, but the city is dark blue. I think the same thing applies to Memphis TN.
Sorry I thought the map would show up on this post.

My co-worker had a car stolen off his street two days ago, Audi Q7.

The cop said they probably used a scanner to clone the key at the back door.

Apparently it's very common.

Put your keys in a Faraday cage if you drive one of these new 'keyless' vehicles.

Yeah and same with San Antonio, TX.....solid blue!

This seems an appropriate place to put this:

It’s not too hard for most cars with the right tools. Here’s more than you need to know:

One of my clients, recently asked me about an incident . He said he heard a car coming down his lane in the middle of the night. He lives very rural, and is the only house on his long lane . He said he observed a pick up sitting near his driveway. He watched the truck for activity for a minute or so, then started to turn on all the house lights .
The truck immediately left, and when he went downstairs to check on everything, he noticed that the windows were down and that the dash was lit like someone left a key on, on his wifes 2017 A6. Both keys were in the house, and he stated that they lock the cars every night religiously .
Im guessing someone was making a play for it

When I installed my remote starter, it included a device to bypass the key, so I suspect there are devices that can do this.

Salt Lake City at number four is a bit of a surprise. Who knew the Mormons were so lawless. :)

Wife calls me from her art studio, battery on her Tahoe is dead.

Grab some cables and head over there.

The car has a fob with a physical key hidden in it.

If the fob battery dies or car battery dies you can use the physical key to unlock the vehicle but there is no ignition switch that accepts a physical key. If the fob battery is dead there is a specific spot in the center console to place it that gives enough charge to allow you to start the car which is what she'd done just in case it was the fob.

I hook up cables, get enough juice, hit start, get all sorts of a crazy light show from the dash and no start.

I'm at it for a good 30 minutes on a hot TX day in a concrete parking lot and said f'k it, call roadside.

I was using my sons Kia and just assumed it did not have the umph to jump a Tahoe.

Guy gets there, hooks up jumper pack, same thing, light show and no go.

We try that a few times and then he switches to jumper cables using his truck.

Same ****, nothing seems to work.

At this point I give up and start to call the dealer to pick it up when roadside guy asks "is the key in the fob?

????

Is the key in the fob?

???? Actually no but why would that matter?

Put the key in the fob.

I put the key in the fob, hit start and boom, she fires right up.

Apparently keyless start GM products have an additional security feature, if you separate the physical key from the fob it disables the vehicle.

Cloning the fob won't do ****.

And I tipped the roadside guy an extra $50.00 cause that was priceless knowledge he imparted.

Wow!

I guess that's one of those "shoulda RTFM" moments.

I started reading the manual to the wife's Outback. But these days, the manuals are far, far bigger than they need to be. I'm guessing lawyers and stupid people are the reason for that.

What model year, roughly, did cars start becoming so hard to steal? Is all this electronic protection a very recent thing?

Guilty as charged.

I had however read part of the manual because the fob vexxed me.

I'd occasionally looked high and low for an ignition switch inside the car assuming the presence of a physical key and door lock meant there should be a physical ignition switch because what good is gaining entry to the vehicle if the fob battery was dead and you couldn't start the car.

That's how I discovered the special slot in the center console to cover the dead remote battery scenario.

It kind of annoyed me because the dealer spent like 45 minutes going over all kinds of stuff inside the vehicle but the key fob charge slot and don't separate the key from the fob were never covered which one would think is far more important info than how to switch from FM radio to satellite.

Agreed, way too much BS in the manual these days. The infotainment system should all be (and is in some cases, I think) in a separate manual. But then they still end up dedicating pages and pages to all sorts of BS (usually at the front of the manual) and then bury the important crap here and there towards the end of the manual.

If the car's got a big screen, the manual should be electronic with linked TOC and Index and should be searchable.
