Pole barn parking garage build
At the suggestion of a forum member I am starting this thread , it is building a parking structure for our daily drivers . I have a man cave two car garage that I built and documented on this forum but that is strictly for man cave activities
We needed a place to park our two daily drivers under roof . So decided to add a 24 x 24 pole barn on the end of our house . The driveway already was there as previous owners parked there under a metal carport . The metal carport has been moved/repurposed elsewhere on the property . The poles extend 10 ' above ground and 3 ' in ground with two bags of concrete in each hole .The three trusses are engineered metal and all roof perlons are 2x6's . The metal roof panels were made with a special condensation barrier on the underside to stop any drips on the interior side of the garage . It is like a felt type material but adhered to the metal as it is being made with glue and heat . Pretty neat stuff The spot where the pole barn is almost level side to side on the front but slopes about a foot or so in the back , I am going to run a perimeter of 2x's at the bottom starting at the highest point . That 2x will be set with about 2 " exposed above grade then the balance of the perimeter boards will be set level . Then I will set 6x6's level and inside of the perimeter boards and all will be screwed together and staked into the ground . Sounds complicated but really is quite simple . Once all that is in place I will kill the grass and start the grading with my John Deere diesel garden tractor . Once the grading is done I will compact it over a few weeks and then fill with gravel , not doing concrete just a gravel base . I will add 2x6 perlons running horizontal on the posts spaced about 2 ' apart for metal panels to be screwed to for the siding . I am going to run electric into the structure so I can have some lights and outlets . Not planning on any garage doors for now but will have an entry door leading onto the small deck going into the house . This will be nothing fancy just a plain Jane type building It was just installed on Wednesday so the ground is still torn up from the bobcat , add to that the projected 2-3 inches of rain tomorrow and Monday it will be quite the slop bowl Here are some pics of what she is starting out as .![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice addition to your covered space.
Could you share a bit more about the roofing metal. I'm on the brink of reroofing a shed building and adding car ports on two sides, so very interested in roofing materials Cheers Richard |

Are you able to custom order roof pitch. I would really like to do what you have done between two of my barns. Any info is appreciated. See pic.
The building on the left (as pictured) has an asymmetrical roof line and I'd need to have the pole barn parking structure match that roof line. You can see in the pic that the rear roof line differs from the front. Here is another view.

I am lucky because I have a metal roof manufacturing facility 20 minutes away . They take huge roles of metal and press their own panels to any length you want. They recently within the past year developed a process to add the condensation barrier to the bottom of the metal as it is being formed. This may or may not be available near you . The metal is standard 29 gauge . Let me know if that answers any questions you might have .

Seahawk the company I used make their own metal trusses , but to my knowledge only in a 4/12 pitch . I just wanted to get it " close " to the house pitch which I think is 5/12 or 6/12 . I like the metal trusses but if I needed a custom pitch or size I would probably go with wood .

Will the cars be entering from the direction shown in the second picture or the other side?

Cool project. I suspect a pole building can be had a lot more reasonably than the stick-built bomb shelter I am building.

There are a number of companies around me here in the panhandle that make those metal roofing panels . I haven't come accross that material being added to them nor the profile used on your roof. I'll have to look around a bit more.
Paul. There are a number of polebarn truss kits available offering different pitches. I got the impression from the folks that built my brothers polebarn recently, that the truss builders could do custom pitches if asked. Here you can see the different pitches on the one being built here.

The pole barns are very reasonably priced Madcorgi.
![]() This 36' x 32' one was installed for $3,500. Without the deck which is now on its way to becoming a screened porch. Cheers Richard |

Yes straight in from the 2nd pic , essentially two 12 ' wide bays . The gravel in front is where the previous carport was installed , I will extend the gravel into the structure .

^^^ There is always a chance
but right now I'm thinking pressure treated 2x's and 6 x's . Main reason is price and I can do it myself . Yes I can make concrete forms but I am NOT mixing a $hit load of concrete bags and may have a problem getting a pro to do this small of a job .

When you put the electric feed in will it be sufficient power for an electric car charger? Future proofing?

Don't see any electric vehicles in my lifetime so no to electric charging capacity . I will plan for some interior outlets , one or two exterior outlets and some interior and exterior lights . Two outlets on the ceiling for possible future garage door openers and that's about it . I have a fully opted two car man cave garage with two post lift and HVAC so I do not need another .

Hey guys I am thinking ahead to the electrical because I will have to bury the conduit/wire fairly soon . I am thinking of a 50 - 60 amp sub panel being driven by a 50 amp breaker in the main box in the house . I will have at most 4-5 interior outlets on the walls , 2 outlets on the ceiling for door openers . Will have some LED ceiling lights .
Will plan for 3 exterior outlets and maybe a few exterior spot lights . With this electrical load does this plan sound ok ? My electric run from house to garage will be about 30 ' will number 10 wire be sufficient or should I plan for # 8 ? All other wiring will be # 12 or 14 . Thoughts ? |

Thanks Milt for the info . Then I will plan on 50 amp breaker in the main house panel feeding the breaker box in the garage . And will use # 8 wire . I can't imagine at any point that more than two outlets will ever be used at the same time .
Maybe one having a battery charger and another having a hedge clipper running .Will be very low amp loads . The heaviest loads I anticipate is garage door openers and that's only IF I decide to add doors . |
