I just could not be bothered to scan every item u look at in a supermarket. If I can't see the price at a glance I sing won't shop there.
Saying that ,currently in these Covid times,I order my groceries online for home delivery as do most Brits, so that I don't have to breathe in other peoples' germs in the supermarket.
I used to enjoy wandering the centre aisles in Lidl and Aldi looking at the non- food weekly specials. The tedium if having to look the prices up of all those hundreds of items would be intolerable

A nice glance at the shelf with the price per ounce or item is handy. Scanning each thing to get that would not be so I wouldn't shop there. I know dad's flip phone would do him no good there.

That said, there are a lot of shoppers that would think this is a wonderful thing.

As for what they're doing, I can't see that going over well. If I can't look below or above the item and see the price, I won't shop there.
Farm and Fleet never got the memo either, though it is Blain's.

Groceries lose a lot of money hiring people to switch tags and on lost/under sales due to mis-pricing.

That said - the side benefit to the grocery is they will likely want you to use their app, and so they will know EXACTLY what you're shopping for now, whether you buy it or not.
I believe this is true. Prices change daily. Electronics may be able to keep up, people and printers can be expensive and still not keep up.

Last time I was at Kohl's they used eInk signs. Low batter usage makes them ideal for stuff like this.

Not sure about this. They are calling it a Scale-Management System. I don't know what "scale" means.
I have a hard time believing you go into a store, look at an item you want and are not able to immediately view the price written or displayed without using an electronic device to find the price.

The store worker that I talked to today claimed that most people already use their smartphones for scanning for the price, browsing for comparable items, or using shopping lists they set up at home.

I agree with most people are using their phones in the store....not sure if that is what they are doing.

Kroger’s has scanners near the entrance that you can pick up and carry with you. They used to have them on shopping carts. Apparently that didn’t go over well.
And it is Kroger’s with the possessive “ ‘s “ - as in “Kroger’s store” because the founder’s name was Kroger. Stores that aren’t a person’s name, such IGA, Pelican, or Centerville Hardware don’t get the “s”.

I stopped going to Krogers permanently when they started that self-scanner nonsense. The membership i.e. purchase-tracking cards had already primed that decision. Since it's about the closest major grocery store they have lost many many thousands from this singular customer over the years.

The nearby Ypsilanti Meijers is also a mess. This past Christmas they had about four registers open and a single line extending to the back of the store which did not move. There were several dozen employees stocking shelves but "none of them were trained for register" according to the customer service gal (she was cute but no photos srry). I stood there watching this line not move, put my cold stuff back, and walked out. Actually, the time before that the same thing happened with the same result.

I've been shopping at Aldi and the mom-n-pops and feeling pretty good about it.
I chose not to play that game.

They know that people won't take the time and effort to scan every item before they put it into the basket and once at the register they won't want to ask to have it put back. This also eliminates comparison pricing between brands and the store brand.

When that happened I would write corporate to let them know that I won't be back. Ever.

In this part of MI...almost every Meijer has a Walmart within a mile of it.
Meijer is a cleaner, nicer looking store, but Walmart totally rules on prices.

Meijer will lose ground when they go to self-scanning.

I don't mind self-checkout. I usually find an open register and I don't get stuck behind granny with 100 items and she waits until the total to decide 'oh, I guess I need to dig out my checkbook' or 'wait 2 minutes while I dig for three pennies that are somewhere in the bottom of my pocketbook'.

I refuse to buy things and not know the cost until I get to the register. If there is no posted price, I won't take it off the shelf.

It’s way more sophisticated than loyalty cards folks. Connecting your social media profile and your mobile device you are already getting ads targeted to your profile. (Not you as an individual, but you as am categorized group).

I worked tech this industry for many years. Linger by the apple sauce for a while with your phone in your pocket? That’s an ad. Shelf displays and store layouts have been fine tuned by sophisticated software for years. Google “planogram” if you want to know more.

I saw quite a few of these in Paris, over a decade past. Weird that the US has been so slow to adopt.

This ^ is it. The stores really want to know the stats, to raise the prices to the maximized price-pain-point.
