Dog fence suggestions

Hey guys need some ideas for a dog fence . Luke is coming up on 11 months old he's a shepherd/lab mix . We are rural with 2.5 acres and want to enclose some of our backyard so he can get running exercise . I am thinking approx. 400 ' of fence . Not interested in a wood privacy fence I don't want to block the view . Not really interested in an electric fence . So some kind of wood/wire fence ?

My guess is at least 5' high maybe even 6' . Like any project cost is a consideration . I am not really interested in DIY because I have enough on my plate but not ruling it out . I will get at least one quote from a pro . What have you installed that worked well ? Like wise what didn't work . The plan is to let him out , exercise with him then bring him in . But if he enjoys it out there and doesn't try to be Houdini 😁 may leave him out longer .

I used Red Brand horse fence. It comes in 48" and 60" height.
A intelligent, coordinated dog could jump it, but mine won't.

My daughter has a Shepherd Husky mix who has jumped a 6 foot wood fence, and I've watched videos of dogs climbing fences, so no fence is perfect. You just have to keep the things inside the fence more interesting than the things outside the fence.

My doofus has dug under the fence and got out, but that was my fault for leaving her out there long enough unsupervised.

Yeah a fence is a deterrent not a foolproof guarantee of containment . I have no doubt if motivated Luke could turn into a gazelle and get over the top . Is horse fence sold in panels or rolls ? I am familiar with hog fence sold in panels . I walked the area that we want fenced I think 250 ' would do it .

underground wire with the shock dog collar?
I have a couple neighbors that use them...they say it works great.

The containment wire can be buried from 1-3 inches deep.

Have you considered this..instead of a fence?
(I'm assuming that by "not interested in electric fence"..you mean an above-ground electric fence)?

It is sold by the roll. Red Brand is 100', 165' and 200' rolls. I guess they do make 72" height as well.
Horse fence is 12.5 gauge. They also make a kennel fence that is 16 gauge.

You should be able to find it in a farm store.

I built my house on a vacant lot in a established suburb. The houses around me were probably built in the 60's or earlier. The previous owner had put up a rabbit fence on some of the lot lines, He put a 6x6 in each corner, with diagonal 4x4s bracing them. Standard T-Posts between them. The fence was old when I bought the lot 17 or 18 years ago, and those corner posts are still fine. Parts of the fence mesh could use replacing, that's why I went with the heavier gauge on the section I put up. I don't want to do the job over again and I won't.

The neighbors had a invisible fence, their dog was out in the street all the time.

I am not a fan of invisible fence with the shock collar.
Neighbor had it, his dog would get out and be on our property playing with my dogs.
I would take my dogs back to his house with my dogs.
His dog wouldn't want to go back because he would get shocked trying to go home.
We have 10 acres we went with Red Brand Horse fencing attached to drill welding pipe.
You also have to figure gates that are dog proof.
We have horses also, like the safety factor of having good fences.

Invisible Fence. I have had this for almost 20 years now and many dogs. If you properly train them to it, they will be obedient to it.

My weimaraner has bad separation anxiety. She's also a pretty athletic dog, or at least used to be in her youth. She used to climb over our 5' and 6' gates (the fences in our backyard are 8'), so when we replaced the gates we asked for 7' tall ones. Then she started digging underneath the gates, but that's another story fixed by paver tiles (bricks were no good). Hopefully your dog won't be as motivated to escape. Weird thing with our dog, with her separation anxiety, was that she wasn't escaping to run away. She was escaping trying to find us when we would leave the house. She would escape, then walk up and down the sidewalk on our block looking for us. If she didn't find us, she would then wait for us in our driveway.

^^^ Same with my dog...the prime reason for leaving the property was to find me.
When she finally figured out that she couldn't run and catch-up to me...she turned around and waited.
Never had a problem after that.

The ones with the wireless transmitter work better. I know several people that had dogs figure out if they run through the area with the buried fence they were free with minimal pain. The transmitter administers a shock while out of range a, for up to 30 seconds or if they return to the range of the transmitter. It does beep for two seconds when they get close to the edge of the range before the shock comes. Nothing is foolproof though. You still need to check the batteries and check for dead spots. For 2.5 acres you would need more than one transmitter and power to them.

+1

I have two Siberian Huskies that are retained in about 3.5 acres of my yard with underground fence and the 9 volt battery powered "stubborn" dog shock collars set on high and my fence controller is set on high. One was trained a puppy with no issues but the other I got when 2 years old and she was took a bit more time to train. Just have to remember to keep the collars tight and check the batteries every couple months. They have free roam of the property by day and even go in the pond and the collars work.

I used to keep them in a chainlink fence dog run during the workday when we weren't home, but the female learned to jump off the doghouse and over the fence. At that point I just decided to trust the underground fence and it has worked now over a year.

The stock wire that comes in the kit is crap, so I reburied 10 ga solid wire a couple years ago and have no breaks in the wire since. I built a three point hitch mounted wire burying tool and it puts the wire in even through stone driveways without issue.

Fully enclosed kennel / run including top and then take him out under supervision. A fence never will be safe IMHO and dogs will dig, eat things they aren't supposed to etc. That's what I do, even in suburbia. Electric fences are a no-go, some dogs just run through them if the distraction is enough and the electric fence doesn't keep other dogs and critters out.

I had a Sheppard that could easily jump a 5 foot fence.

The wireless fence has no boundary to run through. They get out of range and it sends a correction shock after the warning beeps. If the dog doesn't return it will continue to shock for 30 seconds or until the dog returns. You do have to keep good batteries in them though.

Rick - I would consider fencing in just a part of your property for them - maybe immediate surrounding of your home.

I've never ever let my 2 girls out of my sight. Doesn't mean I don't have a fence. It's just my way of ensuring their well being. Not for everyone, I know.

They are my world. And I have no doubt I am theirs.

Billabong (l) made it to 15 before Lymphoma got her. Winkipop turns 16 in May.

I've tried it on my arm, lowest level is annoying, highest level is rather painful.

Yes, we installed invisible fence at my brothers house... so, my brothers and I being the curious types, decided we had to try it....it gets your attention!! The system my brother installed came with a remote, and you could vary the zap level... of course of course we zapped each other on the max setting..

It certainly gets your attention, but is nothing close to being tased... which just puts you down (one of my brothers is a cop), so yes we've all been tased also.. Yea, we're not quite right in the head..
