Lost power at 6am. Got it back at 3pm. Rewarming the house which dropped to the 50s.
TX homes are not built for extreme cold, particularly with no heat... Also good to to have the interwebs back. |

The unvented kerosene and propane space heaters were designed to burn quite clean and not produce much dangerous combustion gasses. Mostly just water vapor and CO2. The open flame was the major source of hazard. Now burning diesel in a kerosene heater will stink but still won't produce things like CO. A friend of mine is doing that in his garage to keep the potted plants from his patio from freezing.

South Louisiana. have inch and half of ice on everything and an inch of sneaux on top of that. The high today was 25. going to 12 tonight. So far we have power. Man, screw this cold weather. I'd rather sweat than shiver....

My buddy in the Woodlands (Houston) said it was 9 degrees, and they were not expecting power back till Wednesday.
Guessing PP member red-beard has generators going. |

AT&T cell is not working well. My parents phones don't work. No water most of the day. The backup generator at the pump station failed. They fixed it later in the day. But we're short on water pressure again. Comcast/Xfinity is out. Fortunately, all of my devices (Laptop and Tablets) have T-Mobile chips. Moved my parents from their house which doesn't have electricity (and therefore, no furnace). Very cold tonight, but warmer tomorrow. Hopefully power back tomorrow. 1,250,000 without power on the coldest night of the year. About 12-13F tonight. |
Did I mention my back hurts? Chipping ice from sidewalk and driveway...

Yeah, these are worse numbers than most hurricanes.

Inside the loop NE Dallas. No blackouts yet but I'm prepped if it goes dark. Big Honda genset test run and ready to plug in. I can run furnace, fridge and entertainment. Enough fuel for 24 hours and plenty of grub for days. I'm your huckleberry Mr Arctic blast.

6º here.
That almost counts as a heat wave for us. It'll only last a couple more months though. |
We got power back around 3pm, only lose it again at 7pm... But I am thankful as I type this in the dark - - 4 hours of power brought the house back up to temp. Every bit helps.
I bought a small generator after Hurricane Ike ('08) and retrofitted it to run nat gas. It's collected dust in the garage for 12 years, but today it's doing actual work: powering the fridge, a coffee maker, a space heater, the TV and a bunch of rechargeable devices. Unfortunately, I never got around to fully wiring the generator backfeed for the house. Never thought my generator had the oomph to power the compressors on the AC units, so why bother. Didn't think about needing it to run the fan for the furnace during a winter blackout.... We tend to fight our last war. |
I b prayin fer youse guys....no picnic here. Low 20s overnight, high of 32F and black ice warnings, Lake Acworth has floating ice. At least there is no wind. My old home town of Santa Barbara looks like it will be a high of 71.
I'm staying home and working on the 9. Electric heater in the garage and Pandora on the cell phone....plenty of beer and Schnapps. What can go wrong? |
Lost power in Seguin at 1:30am back on at 5:30am. Had just moved a larger electric heater to the garage to maintain the water pipes. Minutes later, poof, gone. "Aww, feck me dead!"
I heard a crew working down the street minutes later. Living close to the courthouse has advantages, I suppose. Only dropped to 60 in the house, pipes were at 38 when power was lost. 10F tonight, warming to 36F tomorrow. |
I'm in Jersey Village, fortunately we did not loose power but have a frozen pipe that runs up on the inside of an exterior wall that does not get any sunlight and hope it starts to thaw before it splits.
The hot water heater is acting crazy and hoping I can limp it along for the next few days Many of my friends in Katy have been without power since 2am and left their home. Coldest day since I moved to Houston (11-years ago). It was 1 degree this morning with the windchill and humidity. Currently it feels like 5F with the same conditions. It will be a long night for many sadly. City of Houston have opened-up Warming Stations for many families in distress. |
