Difficult situation.
Doesn't appeal to me, but if culling is needed in certain areas and selling shooting rights enables revenue to be generated from that culling that can then be used for worthwhile activities such as prevention of rhinoceros poaching, then I can live with it.

If we're not talking a controlled cull, then yeah, to those guys I'd say "See you next Tuesday".

No sport in that whatsoever. That elephant is just like us.....it's gets one try on this planet and that's it. Sadly its life was worth all of the few bucks the bullet cost.
I had the rare opportunity to talk to a famous Australian conservationist once. He said killing is not the answer. The answer was to capture females and sterilize them.

Trophy hunters are nothing more the poachers with money.
I can understand the need for population control and if they can generate funds by letting rich guys pull the trigger, why not?

But look at that self loving smile on the guy on the left.
Disgusting.

Posing and smiling next to your kill is very disrespectful IMO.

I am not a hunter, never been a hunter. This doesn't appeal to me at all. When I was younger one of the many thoughts, jobs that went through my head was to track poachers in the Congo, at that time there was a huge poaching problem in the Ndoki National Park in the Congo. I would imagine there still is.

I am not a fan of big game hunting like this. If they can capture an Elephant, Lion, Gorilla, what ever, ship it across an Ocean and place it in an American zoo why can't they capture it the whole herd and move them to another part of Africa? I would imagine there may even be a way of herding them? Can an Elephant be that much harder to herd than a Cow?

As far as these big game hunters are concerned, wouldn't you get the same thrill if you shot it with a tranquilizer dart? You could then theoretically get your thrill five or six times per day?

Just a heartbreaking picture. Never understood the sport or fun in killing...anything. Hopefully a controlled cull as described above but not something I could ever do.

I do a lot of skeet shooting. I could never shoot an animal like this unless by some bizarre circumstance I found myself in a part of the world where Im being threatened by an elephant.

Dont know the specifics of the picture, but Im willing to bet the local herd didnt need culling and these guys didnt do much "hunting" to get this elephant.

Id love to see a fair fight, though.

Exactly. I don't think elephants are exactly over-populating the African continent due to poaching for ivory. I think elephants also live for a very long time and often seem to mourn their dead.

And if you're being threatened by an elephant, you are 1, probably in the wrong place at the wrong time, and 2 weren't paying attention when they tried to warn you off.

If culling why not remove older elephants? Why kill off the future? If real and not a sick joke then that's a disturbing picture to say the least.

Not my cup of tea.

I have known two big game hunters. They paid huge permit fees to the government that helped support local wildlife efforts. All meat was donated to the locals that helped feed the extremely poor.

Wealthy businessman condemned for killing two ‘baby’ elephants on hunting trip

Jines, who is from Alpharetta, Georgia, said he shot the elephants, who were believed to be babies, in Zimbabwe in October 2018 – and has responded to backlash by saying the killings were in self-defense.

In 2014 when US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) officials banned imports of hunted elephants, a Mike Jines was among those objecting.

“Without a strong show of outrage by hunters, the USFWS will just be emboldened to continue down the path of nibbling away at the rights of sport hunters,” he wrote.

Quote:
“The two elephant that are shown in the photos were shot in self-defense, in an unprovoked charge and both elephants were fully mature cows, not juveniles.” Jines, who communicated with CBS46 by email, said the elephants were shot in a designated safari area in Zimbabwe and the hunt was conducted in full compliance with laws and regulations in both Zimbabwe and the U.S............................

The hunt started with a bang . . . literally. Less than thirty minutes into the first morning of the first day we experienced a double elephant cow charge. This was obviously a first for me but it turns out it was a first for Buzz as well. We saw a group of cows from the road and decided to follow them to see if a tuskless was in the group. We caught them quickly and identified a tuskless. We positioned ourselves to get a good look at the tuskless and concluded that since it was just Day 1 we would pass. An instant later she came in an all out charge. Buzz and I both fired two shots a piece and she went down. Then from behind us a large one-tusked cow charged at full speed. We each fired one shot and she crashed to the ground with her hind legs out behind her, indicating the speed and determination of her charge. The two cows were less than forty feet apart with Buzz and I in the middle. Fortunately we had positioned ourselves in some open ground so we had good visibility when the charges came. Certainly a little more excitement than we had bargained for on Day 1.

The layout of the dead elephants could match his story, but the apparent age of the elephants does not in my opinion.

Strangely, I could not find an article that quotes an expert on elephants to dispute Jines's claims about the age and behavior of elephants.

Fact free reporting frustrates me.

I know a guy that lost a thumb holding a gun like that, unloaded or not, it's a bad habit to develop in my opinion.

The point is the variety of opinions. From 'good kill' to 'heartbreaking'.

And from 'trolling' to 'real thoughts'.

When I die, I want to leave the bulk of my money to some organization that hunts down poachers. Those guys would qualify, I think. I might have to start the org. myself.

Money spent on expanding and protecting natural habitat would be better spent in my opinion.

We should all be objecting to emotional baiting such images with no context and fact checking elicit.

Not blaming the original poster, blaming the poor quality of the press coverage.

To me it looks like the hunters placed themselves between a mother and her baby, the mother would charge under such circumstances as I understand it, and the baby would not survive on it's own for long unless another adult female adopted the young one.

Don’t hunt but I do get it if you are going to eat it. In this case, zero honor, zero courage. It really is a pussy sport. What’s the risk?
Grow some balls, go do a combat sport such as boxing, BJJ or wrestling. Some people just suck.
