Dumas RC Hotshot 21 time capsule

One of many things my Brother discussed with me before he passed was if I'd be interested in finishing a kit he bought and started on, but never got around to finishing.
I'd agreed it would be a fun project and gladly accepted.

Just this last week I've felt it was time to take a close look and see what it looks like.

It's a full, complete kit, shipped to my brother's place on January 8, 1983 from Champaign Ill to lovely Everett Wa back in 1983 costing $3.68 for UPS's services.

He did get the mahogany plywood bulkhead done and fashioned an aluminum motor mounting plate as suggested in the instructions.
He had also purchased an outboard Motor for it, so it's ready to build less rigging servos, throttle linkage and fuel line... I have a radio or 6.

One of the first things in the assembly instructions is to build a stand for the boat, that's where I started- basic fitting:

I'd betting this thing will be a hand full at full rip, we shall see.

I friend of mine had one of those back in the 80s. It was very fast and had a sharp front end. So sharp, in fact, that he ran the Hotshot at full speed into the side of a rubber dinghy at the local yacht club and sank it. The dinghy, that is.

Wow, that is super cool!!! I have a fried since 5th grade who's dad used to build RC planes and they had a RC boat called the "Skeedaddle Too". It was also gas powered and made from wood. Cool boat. I have several RC boats, 1 nitro powered Aquacraft Nitro Hammer that is fiberglass, 3 Aquacraft Hammer EPs, and a brushless powered Atomik Whiplash 24. Fun toys.

That is awesome. When I was a poor kid I used to go to the local hobby shop and drool at all of the RC cars, airplanes, and boats they had. All I could ever afford were stupid Revel car models. Probably why my boys have five RC cars and a boat.

Maybe shoot jeffhiggins a message. He mentioned at one point he is mid way through a Dumas hydroplane build.

Thanks!
I've had great albeit brief interactions with Jeff over the years.

One paragraph of instructions recommends moving the bulkhead/transom inboard from the main plan 1 5/8".
They report that when built in that configuration it results in a "much smoother running boat.
I'm all in for that.

Big brother built it to mount the motor flush with the sponsons and fiberglass hull, I'll add a new bulkhead and dremel out the old one, it's well epoxied in.

Note to self, add "Dingy Killer" to the list of potential names.

He bought this boat kit the same year as his Honda Interceptor too...

Super cool, love the classic wood dumas models. I just converted one I found in a second hand shop for cheap to electric, so looking forward to getting it into the lake this year to try it out.
Mine is electric, that gas outboard is a super cool piece of kit. Good luck with the build!

Very cool! Brings back memories. When I was in jr high, I got the 11cc version as a birthday gift one year, and built the boat. Then another year I got a radio. Went to high school, and was finally able to work and saved up to buy the outboard. Finished it right before college.

By time I graduated, I just lost interest in the hobby and never bought the starting gear for a nitro motor. Eventually sold the boat and outboard (for much more than I paid). I think I still have the radio in my basement.

Keep us in the loop on the progress!

K&B 21 engines. Yowzer. On the RC planes with a 7x4 Zinger narrow series wood prop and a tuned pipe they'd turn right at 22,000 RPM. Only engine close to that was the HB Grand Prix 21. Those were the days. I dabbled in the boats once---and still have it, being the Dumas kit of the Miller American Hydroplane. About 80% built since around 1980 with the 60 size engine and running gear....couldn't give it away at the past model airplane swap meets.

Nice! I spent a lot of time and hard earned mowing money in that Hobby Shop back in the late 70s. That and the Tandy Leather shop that was also in Champaign. By the time I had the money to dive into RC, I was spending it on a beat up car and then enlisted in '83.

This will be fun to watch your progress.

Nice job on the build gordner!!!
I built a Miss Budwiser 10th scale in my teens, never outfitted it with radio gear and set the rudder for a big circle... could not get it to run long enough to launch.
With a Son came all fashion of RC cars, some airplanes and I have an electric V-hull that's not super fast, but fun.

The 38 year old instructions detail the motor mount move, the photo on the box has it out on the existing transom.

Definitely mounting the motor inboard, definitely.

How much is shile worth these days?

She's pretty sleek

The inboard edge of the pencil is where the transom needs to be

High def illustrations of engine mod

Still need to determine the Zodiac Killer armament details.

^ Nice boat! ^

Not much headway yesterday, working on other priorities.
I did find about the best Xacto blade set I've ever seen in amongst my brother's modeling kits and supplies.

He had also bought and started a field box kit that I'll finish up too.

I'm listing supplies I need, microballoons, fiberglass resin, hardener and several bits of control gear.

Since the boat is white I am thinking a similar color scheme as his Interceptor may be in order...

It happened in a big lagoon in view of the yacht club. All the beer-drinking yacht clubbers had a good laugh, then they sent someone out to rescue the poor Zodiac captain.
