my lucky day!

On the road with my Fit this morning...about 30 miles from home.
I exit the interstate after a 85 mph drive for a half hour. Car is making a loud vibration noise as I pull into the closest gas station. Every time I give it over 1/4 throttle..it sounds like something is scraping in time to the rpms. Clutch is working good, but the first thing I think of is that it's the original with 235K miles. (throw-out bearing?)
Checked the oil and looked for any leaks underneath. Seeing nothing...I limp it home on back roads. Every time I give it any gas the noise gets louder.

I get it home and start looking better under the hood...can't find anything looking wrong.
Decide to put it up on the lift.....

Cat shield hanging on by one bolt...twisted all the way up and over the exhaust!
If it hadn't been forced upwards...I doubt it would have vibrated so bad.

I broke it completely off by just twisting it. Car is quiet again.

Wow, nice. Glad it wasn't something more of a PITA or $$$$.

I'll prob not even replace it. It was on the bottom of the cat..so it's likely just for avoiding starting dead grass on fire. I don't know why else.

Aluminum shield or the stainless shield that is part of the cat? Edit; Never mind. Just saw your pic.

That's tired.

I'm not sure if aluminum or not. It's two pieces sandwiched together. I could almost separate them.
The cat, underneath, looks like it's been on the ocean floor. The two flanges are just clumps of rust.

Yep...we have unlimited resources of that stuff.
We've had nice weather lately, so the roads are good. But if you get behind a truck, it's just a white cloud following it from the dried salt on the shoulder of the road.
A couple rains will take care of that.

Maybe it was vibration that shook it loose.
This past year, I put in a 12 inch Kicker Comp C subwoofer and an additional amp to drive it.
Along with the Alpine head unit and Alpine power amp...the whole works rocks!
Makes my interior mirror useless.

I'm not looking forward to it's death...but 230K miles....could happen any day.

Didn't want to start a new thread. The reason I went on that trip yesterday...was to buy two new rear tires for my Fit.
Today, I went to Walmart and they had two 15" Douglas tires for $44 each. One of my tpms was showing low battery..so they replaced that also.
Total cost of tires, tpms, balancing and mounting.....$122

These cars are great!...cheap maintenance and cheap daily costs.
