Early Cayenne ultra high mileage
Still looking for something to replace my Tundra with and have been looking at later Cayennes (add a roof rack) and found an early one, 2004 S with 283,000 miles. One owner truck, also a 911 enthusiast, well maintained.
What do you think the expected lifespan of a well-maintained Cayenne could be?

I have 233K on my "S", traded off my extra roof rack though.

How many miles on the engine? How much does a new engine cost?
My '83 Westy has 285,000 miles on it. I had the engine rebuilt last year for $5K and the car is worth at least $20K. It will keep going forever, until it gets totaled somehow. That's only because it holds its value (actually, it goes up every year), and is cheap to maintain. Probably not the case with a Cayenne, as it's just another SUV. There are no comps for a Westy. I'm sure you could keep it going for a long time, but it may not make economic sense. So it comes down to: Is it more economical to spend money maintaining a normal, old, modern vehicle, or to dump it and pay big bucks for a replacement every ten years or so?

I'm not very serious about it, a little maybe, and you make very good points Charlie. I have to assume original engine. But an engine is cheap, under $2K on eBay.
I am looking the next gen model with the better styling and headlights. But I also like the idea of a beater Cayenne.

If it's one owner, does he have maint records for it and what kind of oil does he use in it?
I don't think a car that has had Mobil 1 put in it would have a lot of wear on it.

I have toyed with the thought of a pepper wagon as the used prices can be quite reasonable . They do have some known issues but no real show stoppers . But if/when the engine has to come out I have been told the engine/transmission/entire front suspension has to come out as a giant sub-assembly . If you have to pay a shop expect a $$$ repair bill .

Dropping the motor, etc. wouldn't be a problem for me. We'll see what the seller says later today.

I looked at used Cayennes at one time and the biggest plus to them was that they were so cheap to buy. And I'm talking about clean ones w low to average miles. Why on earth would someone consider a super high mileage example?? And don't say, "because it's cheap." They are all cheap and the expenses start AFTER you own it. I like them but they are a fuel/brakes/tires bill and that's if absolutely nothing ever goes wrong w them, which of course is not realistic.
I'd still potentially own one used but it would be the absolute best example I could find.

After your 928, the Cayenne should seem nice.
Nice that it has full leather. Does it have air suspension or steel springs?

fuel/brakes/tires bills... Brakes last a very long time. Same for tires. Tire wear, lack thereof, really surprised me. Then again the tires are very large diameter, compared to a 911. (lots of tread with fewer rotations per mile. Gas is the biggest expense. you can get well over 20mpg if you drive 55, but realistically 15-17 in mixed mode. The Cayennes are comfortable and capable cars. The trim options vary greatly. Which puts us back to speeder's point; they are all cheap, so find the best example. Of course one that has 285k... I expect it was taken care of. I've seen plenty abused versions with <100k

Let's be clear, I really want an 08+, but I also like the idea of something that has so many miles, everything has been repaired and repaired to last. My 2007 328i is an excellent example. I got it at 167K miles. It now has 246K miles. in that time I have:
Put a $.05 wave washer as a spacer in the ABS sensor since the reluctor rings expand with rust and car goes into limp mode. That was over 3 years ago. I did get new reluctor rings from Taiwan (have to get a new axle here) but it keeps working so... New coil packs. One was bad. Did them all. Battery is now 6 years old so I have to get a new one soon. Just because I don't want to get stuck. Seriously, that's everything. because the PO had everything done. Car looks and drives like an 80K mile car. Love it. Seriously, it's gorgeous with the whole front of the car repainted by the PO. Can I replicate that with an old old Cayenne? Probably not. But a one owner Cayenne is probably a good car in the end. I would have a dealership PPI done if I want it. But again, an 80K mile 08+ is better truck to get. I am wondering if I will miss the pick-up bed. I don't mind taking all the back seats out and putting them in storage.
