For the HUNDREDS of dollars that those cost, you could have a professional sharpen it many many times...

Hell, I'll sell you my 20 year old vintage Lansky system for $100 :D

I have one of these. Works perfect on my kitchen and work knives.

I realize what they cost but, 1) I collect knives, im not looking to sharpen one knife, and 2) im not interested in sending my knife/knives off to a stranger when I can do it myself

Subscribed. I'm not the type to pay someone to sharpen stuff...

masraum 03-31-2021 04:44 AM

For my pocket knives, I've always used a Lansky.
For kitchen knives, I used to have a Chef's Choice. I now use water stones.
I'm not sure how well or easily the Lansky would work on a long kitchen knife.

ramonesfreak 03-31-2021 05:01 AM

I have one, basically same thing that ill use on kitchen knives but i tried it on one of my spyderco knives and butchered the blade.

im looking to sharpen high end pocket knives

Edge Pro. Been using one for over 20 years. Easy to master. Great angle control. It just works...

not being able to clamp the blade in place hasnt been an issue for you? That is probably the only thing im worried about with the edge pro

Not at all. The platform is very stable. I sharpen everything from high carbon chef's blades to japanese steel. It is not hard to master. And the results are great.

ramonesfreak 03-31-2021 05:58 AM

That is not a guided system....although I see a wheel with #s on it...to set degree angle?

im looking to avoid freehanding. Also I wouldnt use a belt or wheel on an expensive pocket knife blade.....If i lived on a farm and did a lot of chicken beheadings with a machete i would invest in one of those industrial looking belt sharpeners

Guided gives a consistent angle across the length of the edge

also, not interested in anything that doesnt allow for stones of various grit....the idea is to get a consistent angle that can be polished to a mirror finish and the touched up on a stop as needed in between major sharpening sessions

EDIT: I see BladeHQ thinks highly of this. Maybe its ok but I dont like the idea of belts....rather use stones. When I said above that I wasnt interested in stones, what I meant was, freehand wet stones...which are obviously great but I dont have the time or interest to develop a consistent technique for those

The other thing that concerned me was, looking at the Apex model, the suction cup base.....I might not be working on a surface that can accommodate a suction cup

Any issue with that?

I've been using one of these to sharpen my Benchmades for the last 20 years. I've gone through a bunch of different Benchmades in that time. It's always worked great.

When I bought it, it was what I could afford. I'd probably get a slightly better Lansky (diamond and more stones) if I purchased one today. I also added the serrated stone.

I've had a couple of 940s, one with a red anodized handle and the other carbon fiber.

for those curious about what im talking about, this is an example of a guided sharpener....NOT great for large kitchen knives but for everyday pocket knives it is....
