TFM says whack it with a hammer....

So I was given a reloading press, free (like a puppy). Also came with the promise of a few pounds of powder and sufficient primers to load up a case of ammo.

So off to midway, midsouth, etc. and finally the big brown truck of happiness has come and gone... several times.

I "splurged" 'cause a Lee universal decapper was on sale. Cool. No lube needed, etc. just pop them primers out, then I can worry about sorting, cleaning, resizing, etc. Of course, it comes without instructions...

Screw it in w/ ram in right spot, making contact w/ shell holder, cool. Lower ram, put empty in, raise ram... and nothing. Decapping pin not long enough? WTF?

Anyway, the top of the die has a screw in adjustment for the decapping pin - perhaps I need to screw it in some? Nope. Almost frozen solid in place. WTF....

Googling around a bit, I finally find the official Lee video on adjusting the tension... Aha!

So yeah... start by screwing die into press (check!). Then whack butt end of decapping pin with a hammer until it is flush, then try depriming. Pin should move back up. Whack pin down again, tighten tension bolt (it isn't length adjustment... just holds it tight to keep from slipping), try again, repeat until primer pops out.

Apparently this way if there is a blocked primer hole, off center hole, berdan primed (not a central hole, not easily reloadable), etc. the decapping pin will be pushed up and avoid damage to it.

Ironic isn't it? Ammo is expensive enough to make reloading really pay off but we can't get the goodies we need.

Have you tried asking Snowman for advice?

My buddy that gave me the press and I are meeting next weekend to shoot a bunch of his ammo through his machine guns, then he's going to swing by my place and we're gonna set things up and produce a box or two of ammo.

Fortunately, I'm selling my 223 AR uppers, and I've only got 762x39 ARs left and a few cases of Wolf. I've got 400+ of good brass cased 223, and a new bolt gun to shoot 'em through, and the reloading press and sufficient supplies to load not quite 1k rounds
