Anybody have roll up garage doors ?
I have a summer of concrete work ahead, then I can build the end walls for my quonset hut home shop.
I really want 2 front doors, and one rear door, I may do one big commercial door up front, then 2 smaller roll up doors, that will not get used as much . Roll up doors, seem less expensive, and probably easier to diy I am guessing , they are not insulated as well as normal doors/ Any other gotchas ?

I have a storage shed that I installed a four foot roll-up door about 10 years ago.
Haven't had to do any upkeep on it at all...still works with just a couple fingers to lift it. I remember installing it....it was a heavy beast and difficult to do by myself. all in all....I like it.

My dad has this on his shop. One at each end.
No insulation. They rattle when it’s windy out. They are loud going up and down. They have survived with 0 maintenance since they were installed.allied in 1987 or 88 so there is that. I don’t really like them.

(repost)I did some maintenance and am very pleased with the results.
-Adjusted balance springs for equal tension L/R with nothing rubbing on the tracks. -Adjusted chain drive a bit tighter but still with a little slack. -Adjusted final stop positions for sufficient seal. -Adjusted track connection points so they match up. -Scraped all hard grease off of tracks. Cleaned with WD-40 to soften any remaining. -Lubed all roller points, hinges, chain, cables and pulleys with copious light oil. Also a thin smear of grease on the track. Took a few hours but it's very quiet now. In ten years I'll have to do it again.

(I've had both) I've currently got roll up garage doors and a few years ago I installed auto door lifts myself.
They're better than panel doors because they don't hang down from the ceiling and take up less room but you can't insulate them. Not a big deal for Australia. Just a word of caution. - The lifting spring for all doors are very powerful and I've heard some horror stories about them. If you have any doubts pay someone to do this for you.

Our previous house had a detached garage with a 16' wide commercial roll up door . It worked fine but was heavy to lift . And impossible to insulate . In Georgia in the summer you could stand 3' from the door on the inside and feel the heat . For a working garage with HVAC you will see $$$ going out the door .
Our current home I built a two car man cave , built tight with 2x6 wall studs . I went with insulated panel doors with windows . The natural light is welcome but gives away some insulation . With wall mounted door openers the doors/openers are nearly silent in motion . I highly recommend panel doors over roll up doors . Fred with your mechanical ability you can install panel doors with the help of one friend . It is not rocket science , getting the tension right on the spring/s is the hardest part in my opinion . You are in the north east so some tough winter days . It is much easier to make a panel door weathertight ( within reason ) vs a roll up door . Wall mounted openers allow ceiling clearance for a lift , if that is not important then traditional ceiling mounted openers do the trick .

I looked at installing one. They are quite heavy so make sure your door opening is framed strong enough to support it, especially if you get an insulated steel one.
I ended up not doing one b/c of the weight and my garage not being framed to support it.

Lift master makes a nice electric opener for roll up doors. You can connect it to your WiFi and open it with your phone. This allows you to open the door for someone if you are away as well.

I don't think you want roll up doors anywhere cold. If you do work in your shop, get a proper insulated door.
I have roll-up doors in my building, but not exterior, they are interior divider doors.

I've got a 10' x 12' or so rollup door.
I really recommend that you get an insulated door!!!! It blocks out heat/ cold and noise much better than a single ply door. Not DIY friendly, but so worth it. |

I'm looking to install one indoors on one end of my barn (no wind) that will be about 12' wide x 8' tall so rolling projects can be in my heated space.
