Sour cream on Mexican food.....yum!

I understand that in Mexico they use Crema - different than sour cream.

But as an alternative I REALLY LOVE sour cream!

I made something today - small size flour tortilla (Sweet Hawaiian) - re-fried beans - salsa Verde - shredded Mexican blend cheese - heat it until cheese melts - throw on the sour cream - and go to town - yum!

Sounds good!

I used to be a Mexican waiter to help pay for my multiple mortgages. My favorite meal at the place was chili con queso with LOTS of sour cream.

I didn't know you were Mexican. The worst thing about Mexican food is cilantro!

If you like sour cream you should try Tzatziki.

It's a little bitter, but like parsley is so good for you.

Some people are genetically predisposed to despise cilantro.

What I've heard most often from folks that don't like it is that it "tastes like soap."

I am one of them, but strangely, my mom and sister loved it.

Me too.

And sour cream is gross to me on Mexican food.

Baz, Enjoy your food however you like, we have very different tastes on Mexican or more accurately Tex-Mex food.

Some folks like/put sour cream on chili. That's not my thing.

Crema only on Mexican food! I love fresh cilantro. Never heard of anyone comparing it to soap? Try coriander (which is ground up cilantro seeds) - different taste and also good.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coriander
Quote:
The essential oil from coriander leaves and seeds contains mixed polyphenols and terpenes, including linalool as the major constituent accounting for the aroma and flavor of coriander.

Different people may perceive the taste of coriander leaves differently. Those who enjoy it say it has a refreshing, lemony or lime-like flavor, while those who dislike it have a strong aversion to its pungent taste and smell, characterizing it as soapy or rotten. Studies also show variations in preference among different racial groups: 21% of East Asians, 17% of Caucasians, and 14% of people of African descent expressed a dislike for coriander, but among the groups where coriander is popular in their cuisine, only 7% of South Asians, 4% of Hispanics, and 3% of Middle Eastern subjects expressed a dislike.

About 80% of identical twins shared the same preference for the herb, but fraternal twins agreed only about half the time, strongly suggesting a genetic component to the preference. In a genetic survey of nearly 30,000 people, two genetic variants linked to perception of coriander have been found, the most common of which is a gene involved in sensing smells. The gene OR6A2 lies within a cluster of olfactory-receptor genes, and encodes a receptor that is highly sensitive to aldehyde chemicals. Flavor chemists have found that the coriander aroma is created by a half-dozen or so substances, and most of these are aldehydes. Those who dislike the taste are sensitive to the offending unsaturated aldehydes and at the same time may be unable to detect the aromatic chemicals that others find pleasant. Association between its taste and several other genes, including a bitter-taste receptor, have also been found.[39]

Anytime I have Latino food I EXPRESSLY state no ****ing cilantro.....I once was delivered a dish where it was covered with that disgusting weed. I told the server....same fooking dink that took my order......step back....I sailed that dish across the room and walked out. I assume they are still looking for me. My ex BIL tells me the dent in the wall is still there. Tiny print underneath says "OK...no cilantro"...

I don't like pickles, either....but at least I can peel them off and wing them at the cook...."I'm a people person".

There is more than one type of crema in Mexico. Broadly speaking, you have “table cream” but they also have sour cream. You will also find slightly different variations on this from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, etc.

Go to the Mexican markets, you can usually find the Mexican versions and probably the stuff from El Salvador.

Crema doesn’t go on everything, however…

If you want to explore beyond your gringo roots, this is the first cookbook I would recommend:

It was part of a series of cookbooks celebrating the major cuisines of the world; it is quite excellent, overall. They are out of print now but you can find them pretty easily. I’d recommend you buy the entire set, but that’s just me. Prices probably start at seven or eight bucks per book.

The only thing I like more than sour cream on Mexican food...is good guacamole.
(actually, I don't think I've ever had bad guacamole)
