I think we might be looking at some other source of power like hydrogen or some such, or many generations later of improved batteries. Or carbon neutral "synthetic" gas.

In our lifetime, it is not likely that the ICE will be replaced by battery powered EVs.

For the majority of drivers, an EV is far more practical than an ICE vehicle.

Everyone seems to become a long-haul trucker when discussing the downsides of EVs but they're far superior for 99% of driving.

Well you can say that your opinion is that you prefer your EV for 99% of driving, but you can't say it's more efficient for 99% of all driving.

I'm not watching the YouTube video. Yes, it's more efficient, in that I don't waste time with maintenance or refueling, both of which you don't realize are a huge inconvenience until you don't have to do them.

MrBonus 04-27-2021 04:01 AM

I mean, are you really concerned with energy storage/density and MPKWH while driving daily? Or do you just get in your vehicle and drive to your destination?

I'm not the one who made the mathmatical claim. It appears that your second claim is that it's not THAT inconvenient for....99% of the people, right?

So is it efficiency or convenience?

Yeah...it is inconvenient to wait for the batteries to charge when I've got to go somewhere.

Let's both start out with empty batteries and an empty gas tank. I'll race you.

I've literally never once had to wait for my battery to charge to get anywhere. I have had to annoyingly stop for gas however when it's inconvenient for my schedule on numerous occasions which is both inefficient and inconvenient.

I start every day with a full battery.

^ Well no wonder you think everyone's a "long haul trucker". You don't drive anywhere.

He also lives in the tiny little state. Only Rhode Island is smaller. Anyone that has driven across Texas or up and down California knows what driving in a big state is like.

So why should I buy an EV for commuting and then buy a second car for road trips? We seldom fly anywhere but we do drive from national park to national park. And why would I want to use an EV on our trip last weekend to go 6+ hours to pick up a motorcycle with a trailer? The minivan made it down without filling up for gas so I filled up at my convenience there. I did have to make a quick stop on the way home with the extra drag of a bike on the trailer. With an EV it would not have been a 10 minute stop for gas, drinks and a bathroom break. So, I can own an EV to commute and do those little chores, but it would cost a great deal more than just keeping our ICE vehicles.

Good thing interstate travel is not prohibited in this country.

Huh? I have taken numerous road trips in my car. I rarely stop at a Supercharger for longer than 10 minutes because I end up recharging at my destination.

I have roughly 300 miles of range with my car. Do you frequently drive more than 300 miles daily?

With your car, it would not make the 407 mile trip on a single charge and towing a trailer I am not sure it would make it with one stop on the way back.

Some of our road trips are 2800 to 3000 miles. That is a lot of wasted time waiting for charge, assuming some of those places have a charger.

10 years from now this might all be different, but for us an EV would be a local runabout vehicle.

Fair, doing 3000 mile road trips is a weakness for the current EV battery/charging infrastructure.

Living in the northeast, I can basically go anywhere in from Florida to Maine without any real planning involved, but I hear some of the remote midwestern areas you have to do some advanced charging planning through the more rural regions.

There is a lack of a fast charging network where I live. The present premium for an EV over an ICE along with the cost of a home charger buys a bunch of fuel. Just not viable for me at the current time.

But Sooner or later

I don't even charge my mobile phone daily. Even that only requires a charging every 3 days.

This seems a bit like a vinyl vs MP3 discussion.
