Love, Hate or Indifferent, How do You Feel About Your Name?
I'll admit to never liking mine.
Even after 63 and a half years, when my formal name is called at, for example, a doctor's office, I don't like the sound of it. My mother has long insisted that I'm named after a war hero, for whom the street my folks' first home was on was named. And I've long countered that, no, the street is named after a war hero: I'm named after a street. And not a street with a cool name, either! _ |
I hate my name. well, I hated my name for most of my life.
|
I love my name! There's a Saint named after me fer cryin out loud. How awesome is that!?
|
Prior to the advent of cell phones and caller ID, I pretty much had to use my full name whenever I called someone on the phone. In my small office of 9 people, there are 3 Mikes. In my grade school class, there were 3 also. A common name can be an inconvenience.
On the other hand, it sure beats being called some of the crap that famous people are presently naming their children. Apple, Win, North, Dream, etc. |
As a kid not so much it was different, by teen years it was different so stood out but also famous. In the last tent years it has become rather popular so it's now more main stream. Put my initials together and you get DR. So have had the nick name Doctor or Doc. as some even here call me.
For most of my life it has been ok or cool. |
I was a Chinese kid growing up a an older white dudes name. good times.!!
my mom cannot even pronounce my name. :) |
Is your real name Carl?

I've never liked my name. At a party in the 70s or 80s, I met a guy with the same name. We both agreed we didn't care for our first names. He told me I was lucky though, as his last name was "Yudkavitz."

I was named after my grandfather - was originally Verne but hated being called Vernie so he had it changed. I'm just Vern and I don't hate it but don't love it either. Been called Vernon, Vernie, LaVern, Vernal, Vernaldo, probably some others too. It's never easy in restaurants when they need your name for the order - most younsters have never heard it before.

I am fine with mine, Phil.
My last name is terrific. It is nearly impossible for others to figure out how to pronounciate. The first day of school the teacher would call roll. When they would get to me it was Phil....uhhh...I knew it was me. |
When I got married, I dropped my middle name, Elizabeth, using my maiden name as my middle. My middle name was after my very wonderful grandmother, who died the following year. I wish I had kept that and dropped the maiden name.
My husband's family is Greek. I joked with my son that if 300 had come out before he was born, he would have been called Leonidas. He now uses that as his screen name when playing video games online. |
What's in a name?
I was the youngest of ten kids. I got named for one of my Dad's cousins. It turns out a famous Canadian actor had the same name. Also it turns out to be Welsh for "from the dark fort " My friends just shortened it in school and so that's how i 'm known to everyone outside the family. Best Les |
What name is better than Superman?
I have never known a man named Vern who was not a man's man and a total stand-up guy. My name is James (Jim). No complaints. |

Matt, I’m good with it. Either I fit it or it fits me, something like that.

My name is my name. It doesn't mean anything to anyone else. When I was born my parent's were so indifferent to having a kid that their friend name me. I have an Irish name and a German heritage LOL!
I went to school with a kid who was also named Patrick, but they called him Rick. I thought that was so cool. People called me Pat until I was out of high school. Now the only people who use the diminutive are members of my family. I hate "Pat." I don't understand why women change their last names when they get married. I know some who have had 5 last names. A friend of MrsWD's has three boys and they all have different last names. It has to be incredibly confusing. My name is my name and it hasn't ever changed. I like that about it. |
