TSA PreCheck
My five year enrollment in the TSA PreCheck program is coming to an end next month.
The renewal cost is another $85 I am wondering if it's worth it. The last several times thru security, the TSA precheck line was almost the same as the regular herd was. Is it worth renewing?? |
The other issue is backscatter x-ay vs metal detector. And leave laptop in bag vs pull everything out.
And do you wish to hangout with the unwashed masses... Mine comes with Global Entry. And I have a free Clear membership. I would not ;pay for it.... |
In the five years that I've had it...the only glitch has been my left leg with the metal rod.
It delays the whole process...but I guess it's still faster than the regular line. |
I think it depends on which airport is your main airport.
Just about every time I use mine, I wonder why everyone doesn't. Lines are usually much shorter and faster, do t have to take off shoes, laptops out, etc. Also check to see if any of your credit cards give you a credit to get it. Mine did, which is icing on the cupcake. https://www.tsa.gov/precheck/credit-cards-offer |
One of my buddies has a titanium hip. He loves the backscatter x-ray
|
When I purchased mine..five years ago, it was definitely faster than not.
Now..the word is out and most people have it. Which leads to equal lines. Major airports are DTW and GRR |

The cost isn't a big deal...it's just whether or not it's worth it.

BTW, typing this from 37,000 feet...

^^^ I will be there tomorrow!
DTW to FLL |

Great pic! |
Also...everytime I go thru the TSA PreCheck line....the guy at the desk always gives me the 'twice over' look before he lets me thru. (It's almost like I'm attempting to commit a crime.)
At the regular line...no problem, show the papers...you're good. |
I’ve had it for a long time and find it to be totally worth it. I wouldn’t travel without it.

It might have equal lines at certain airports but with Tsa precheck, I don’t have to take off my shoes, light jackets and laptop and that’s totally worth it for me. I just renewed mine a month ago. I fly every 2-3 weeks so it’s totally worth it. If you fly only a few times a year then it might not be worth it. |
Get Global Entry instead for $15 more if there is even a 1% you’ll travel internationally in the next 5 years. The last time I came back into the US, I would’ve gladly paid $100 just to skip the customs line that was at MIA.
Ymmv, but I find a significantly shorter line at pre-check the vast majority of the time. Plus you don’t deal with the full body scanners and taking your shoes off. Global Entry/ Pre-check all day long. |
I'll probably renew.
Just bothers me that those that don't have it get through security equally as fast. $85 should have some benefits more than not having to take shoes off. |
The last couple of times I flew out of San Jose the pre-check line was longer than the normal line... coworker and I split up to test it, and sure enough she got through first (I was in pre-check).
Global Entry still totally worth it though. |
Buy Clear plus renew your TSA Precheck. At airports that have Clear it's pure bliss. Like flying in the 1980s again.
|
I've encountered more than a few times where it's literally faster to avoid the TSA Precheck line and go regular. Everyone seems to have the Precheck these days.

That is exactly my concern. |

I will never ever be without Global Entry. Since I got it, I have also gotten the Amex Business Platinum card. So my card covers the renewal. TSA Pre-Check is sometimes ok. Mrs. Lee doesn't have it, but when I book flights for both of us, they give it to her. But coming home from int'l. flights makes Global Entry priceless. Oh man, I can't imagine waiting in those lines. I have had my bags and been at the Uber pick up literally less than 10 min. from getting off the plane from Europe or Mexico or China, while the peasants had a good hour or more wait. Worth every single penny to me.

Why yes, it does! AMEX FTW.
|
A lot of you mongrels won't qualify for Global Entry. Only us Elite can get it. :p
I like Global Entry, I've renewed it once already, and I carry the card with me at all times, just so I can shove it in the face of anyone that asks that YES, I *DO* have a proof of citizenship on me. :D |

If you are even Silver on United, it is $109.
|
Free if you are Diamond on Delta.
|
I'm United 1K and it is free. It hasn't helped yet. Yesterday I went through the Clear line. There were no lines at all anywhere. In fact, they closed the "Pre-Check" side and we all had to do the regular stuff except back-scatter X-ray.

No DUI's in the past ten years NO BK's Never had a tax lien Always paid child support Past DoD secret security clearance is a help (Thank You Rockwell Corp.) Most can't get the card due the reason demons |
No Drug convictions, ever...
Someone I know, his wife made him apply and he "forgot" he got caught at the border with pot in his youth...Denied! |
I love Global Entry....
Now if I could just start traveling again. |
TSA Pre is still way better based on a recent trip to Florida. Instead of Global Entry I use the mobile passport app and in many airports, such as LAX and BOS there are designated lines for people using the app with only a few people in line.
|
I got Global Entry (which includes PreCheck) as a bennie from my credit card and it's gold. I fly in and out of ORD and can get through passport control in five minutes. PreCheck saves me the security theater of removing my shoes, belt and jacket and taking my iPad out, and it also always saves me time. I also have the Mobile Passport app so I can use whichever is handier. If you like the feeling of being in a special club that only some people are allowed into, then PreCheck is of less value than it was some years ago, but still valuable to a degree that depends on what airports you fly out of. If you like to avoid pseudo-security measures that are annoying, it's no less useful now than it ever was.

all this time, I thought it expired in 1 year.
wow. I love the thing. my wife doesn't have it, she thinks its "elitists" or something. :) I always blast thru, get coffee for two, sit down and relax..then she comes trudging along. good times!! |
do they notify you to renew? how does it all work. I just mail in the fee?
