your desktop OS that is the same for everybody and has loads upon loads of functionalities and tools and programs that each might be vulnerable.

So unless maybe you use some rare Linux variant as your desktop an are extremely disciplined in terms of what you do on it, what you allow on it, and how fanatically you update and maintain your system, My money is on the online company run by pros.

I quit remembering passwords long time ago.
I use iOS password manager enabled by my fingerprint, so easy.

As long as it isn't at your desk it is fine. Here, you would be escorted out for keeping a written password near your desk or a non-protected file on your computer.

They are not portable across devices or even different browsers on the same device.

PW managers allow you access to your info anywhere, any time, from any device.

If you are using icloud keychain you are using a basic password manager same as Lastpass or Bitwarden (free) and limited to your ecosystem.

There are 2 Macs, 2 Win 10, and Debian box sitting on my desk.

I use them all, every day.

iCloud keychain would be useless for me.

So to answer your question "why pay for a password manager when they are built into the browser?", see above
