Oh, no. Kentucky Derby winner failed drug test
https://www.wlky.com/article/kentucky-derby-winner-medina-spirit-returns-positive-drug-test/36374437
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday that his barn has been told Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drug test, the latest doping scandal for horse racing and arguably the sport’s premier trainer. Flanked by his attorney Craig Robertson in a morning news conference at Churchill Downs on Sunday, Baffert said Medina Spirit was found to have 21 picograms of the steroid betamethasone, double the legal threshold in Kentucky racing, in a postrace sample. Last month, Baffert won an appeals case before the Arkansas Racing Commission, which had suspended him for 15 days for a pair of positive drug tests involving two of his horses that won at Oaklawn Park on May 2, 2020. The horses tested positive for lidocaine, a painkiller, which Baffert said they were exposed to inadvertently. “There’s problems in racing,” Baffert said. “But it’s not Bob Baffert.” The New York Times said in November 2020 that Baffert-trained horses have failed at least 29 drug tests in his four-decade career. Churchill Downs issued the following statement Sunday morning: "It is our understanding that Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit’s post-race blood sample indicated a violation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s equine medication protocols. The connections of Medina Spirit have the right to request a test of a split sample and we understand they intend to do so. To be clear, if the findings are upheld, Medina Spirit’s results in the Kentucky Derby will be invalidated and Mandaloun will be declared the winner. Failure to comply with the rules and medication protocols jeopardizes the safety of the horses and jockeys, the integrity of our sport and the reputation of the Kentucky Derby and all who participate. Churchill Downs will not tolerate it. Given the seriousness of the alleged offense, Churchill Downs will immediately suspend Bob Baffert, the trainer of Medina Spirit, from entering any horses at Churchill Downs Racetrack. We will await the conclusion of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commissions’ investigation before taking further steps." |

Not a good sport. Horses are abused in all aspects of racing, including harness racing which is probably the worst for doping horsed. My dad worked at a track taking urine samples after races and the vet alway found some questionable drug in the urine, but kept quiet about it. Someday, not in my lifetime, this “sport” of kings will cease to exist, much like grayhound racing tracks in Fla.

From what I have read the owner/trainer are appealing the findings . If the appeal is successful he keeps the win . If they lose the appeal they get disqualified and the 2nd place horse is declared the winner . The article I read said this is the fifth horse from this stable in the past year that has tested positive for banned drugs .

^^^ What I was thinking about was the other folks who were "betting" on the race. Never been to a horse race... don't folks bet at the track, off track, and other places... Vegas, etc. How does that get "fixed" if a new winner is declared?

It will change gambling some how... how I don’t know.
I imagine there will be a hold on winnings or the bet money goes to whatever horse is the victor of the day.

You bet big — or little — on the Kentucky Derby on May 1 and lost, and now it appears your horse might have been beaten by a cheater. What happens now?
Well, when it comes to wagers, nothing. Pari-mutuel wagering is unlikely to be affected. Losing bettors won’t get their money back. And, as unfair as that sounds, it gets worse: Your buddy who had the winner gets to keep his money, even though the horse he bet on, Medina Spirit, might have been dirty. And a bettor who had money to win on second-place finisher Mandaloun, likely won’t cash that ticket, either. According to the Courier-Journal of Louisville: The last time a Kentucky Derby winner was disqualified for a positive drug test (Dancer’s Image, 1968), the Kentucky Horse Racing commission ordered Forward Pass, the horse that crossed the finish line second in the race, be considered the winner of the 1968 Kentucky Derby, except for pari-mutuel payoffs. |

If you place a bet at a book in Vegas they don't take your name, you have a betting ticket. If you win, you cash it in and fly back to wherever you came from. There is no way to reverse the outcome.

I would bet $#*%$& that betting at Bookies diminishes for ohhhh about 5 minutes...
They call habitual Gamblers degenerates for a reason... Lots of ordinary people who came here to live found out they have a problem. You see the oldsters sitting by the hour at the machines hitting the button on the slots with a cig in their mouths and a drink by their hand. My degeneracy came at the buffet line...you could see I got value for my money by my expanding waist line...

As my farrier reminds me, there is nothing they do at the track that is in the interest of the horse.

Dead zombie eyes, completely detached without any thrill of winning or dejection of losing. Just pushing buttons like mice in a laboratory experiment. What are the chances that the Kentucky Derby "winner" is exonerated?

Used to be the old ladies sat watching stoopud TV with their zombie eyes all day. At least somebody is getting their money now.
Ever since that white-haired horse guy suddenly began winning all these races I thought he looked like a crook. You can't punish the horse bettors for the sins of the trainers any more than you can blame the casino for the sins of the gamblers. It's wagering. You pays your money and you takes your chances. All gambling, including he lottery, is a tax on people who can't do math. |

Cheating?!
Nah, that must be conspiracy theory stuff. Horse racers wouldn't cheat. They have all the integrity and dignity of politicians. ![]() Besides, it would be far too difficult to rig a horse race. gti
