Pursuit and Evasion driving

I've always thought it would be interesting to take either/both pursuit and evasion driving courses. I don't think that I need either for any reason, but it would be interesting, and I suspect, some aspects of almost any driving course would, I think, have to have some application that could make you a better driver.

I'm sure we've all seen this. This is what triggered the post.

Have you ever seen a demolition derby? The rear end is the least vulnerable part of a vehicle. Unless it’s a 911, I guess.

The two thoughts that I had from the video. The bad guys were shooting at the right side of the vehicle from the left. When they started shooting, he swerved hard left. I'm guessing that serves two purposes, 1 if the guns are on the left side of the shooting vehicle and you swap to the other side, it gives you some time while they move the guns to the other side and 2 swerving in front of that vehicle would probably put them on the defensive and throw them off their game.

Then farther in the chase when the guys in the other pick up truck are outside the truck, running through them probably also serves a couple of purposes, 1 you may take some out 2 if they scatter because they are running for their lives, it'll probably take them longer to get back in their vehicle to pursue you.

It was a lot of fun. Instructors would state at the beginning to leave your ego at home, if you did one could learn lots. I took several courses in basis training and later with the RCMP.

If you think someone is following you. Not a guns out situation, more of a "come back later and burgle the rich man's house" sort of situation. On the motorway drive in the fast lane then (with big margins and safely) cut across the traffic in the slow lane and take the offramp. This way the guy following can't make it in front of and across the traffic too to take the offramp. also approach a stop or give way intersection. Wait until some cars are coming, then with margins again!, cut in front of them and drive off.

Now, if you are out to get someone. Follow them on a twisty road with a steep bank down one side. Don't ram them, but rather love tap them then get on the gas so you are pushing them. Point of impact being 75% of the way across the car to wards the middle of the road. They will put on the brakes, loose control and go down the bank.

I have a very rare Certificate - I'm certified as a "Pursuit Instructor" from the Washington State Patrol. Many stories and good times.

Such a term not longer exists. Class is now call "EVOC" - Emergency Vehicle Operator Course.

Our local county sheriff department has a fantastic track for teaching that. The City owns the land and leases it to the county for $1 per year. The county lets the city cops use it. We used to get to use that site for our autocross but politics got in the way.

They had a fleet of cars that are retired cop cars with rear ends all beat up from teaching the pit maneuver. They also teach the motorcycle cops very slow driving in crowds, and high speed driving.

It is next to their shooting range. They have a rifle range and pistol range out there. It is a great facility for the police and sheriff's department.
