My son is a US Army Soldier!
I could not be more proud! My son completed BCT and the Forge yesterday and we were able to see the live stream this morning from Ft. Benning of him 'turning green' and getting his star and patch.
He will stay at Ft. Benning and finish out his training and has goals of Ranger school and he's an excellent marksman. Excited to see what comes next!

Congratulations! I remember graduating OSUT (BCT and AIT combined) it was a big day.
I'm sure when you finally get to see him in the flesh he will be a completely changed man. Good on you for raising a fine soldier and someone who has taken the oath to serve his country!

Great news. Just one thing... Make sure you do everything you can to encourage him to stay in until he reaches retirement age. I don't know how it works in the US army but it's 20 years in the Australian army.

First off, hats off to your son for completing his basic training...something you both can be proud of for sure.
A question came up recently when discussing the modern military with some friends. If someone isn't interested in making a career of today's all-volunteer US Army, why would a new recruit choose a combat MOS over a one that would provide training and skills that can be readily transferred to the civilian workforce? Even in a peacetime army, the combat soldier's role can be difficult at best, and in today's crazy world, it could easily become downright dangerous too. The Army has a variety of occupation specialties (MOS), many of which provide valuable training for challenging positions that don't involve being placed in harm's way. Some examples here: https://www.thebalancecareers.com/complete-list-of-army-enlisted-mos-s-3346173

Thank you all for your kind words and support! In terms of career, he's wanting to be a medic, but by the time he went in, that job was not available. He's also considering following his old man into Cyber Security :--)
