"Swollen Nuts"... Lug Nuts that is !

If you have a 2000 -> 2015 or so Ford I suggest you go see if your lug wrench / socket can actually be used to remove any of them. I stumbled upon an article today about Ford "swollen lug nuts" and checked. My breaker bar with 21mm socket which I carry in the truck would not fit over ANY of the 24 lug nuts on the 2015 F150. If I had a flat? just call AAA as I could not change any of the tires.

As I was getting new shoes for the F150 today anyway, Discount Tire replaced all 24 lug nuts with solid Steel chromed lug nuts for $60 which I was happy to pay for. Interesting article per swollen lug nuts:

I've replaced at least a hundred of those damn things.

It's a stupid design.

My buddy had this problem. When he took the truck in to get new tires the dealer tried to sell him new lugg nuts. The excuse was someone had improperly tightened them. That dealer was the only one to ever serviced the truck. He bought new luggs on line for way less than the dealer wanted.

My wife’s old Land Rover had one, I could figure out why the socket didn’t fit when it fit the other 19 nuts. I was able to finally get it off and replaced.

I changed over to solid lug nuts on my 2016 F150 and my Forest River travel trailer which also had them. Don't know why they put such cheap OEM stuff on there, it can't be that much of a cost savings.

If you do end up with "swollen nuts" a quick fix is to hammer a 12 pt socket over them to crank them off.

mine stopped the tire shop cold. apparently, they are not allowed to go to extreme measures to take them off. by extreme, I went up 1mm in size, with a 6-pt socket and took them off.

I ordered new steel nuts and went back. haha. I get it. they didn't want to get left holding the bag. I understand.

Same for my 2014 F150.

My parents had a 76 Olds Cutlas. Same issue back then.

Maybe if you wait long enough, they'll just shrivel up and fall off?

The PO of my Cayman did not have the security socket for the factory wheels. I used the Craftsman Damaged Bolt remover. It worked so well, I went back and bought every size socket they make. They do come in handy if you get a rounded off nut, bolt, cap bolt such as the soft triple square CV bolts on your drive axles.
