We live in a fear driven society

With all the "shortages" and people panic buying, it strikes me that we live in a society driven by fear. I've always said that fear and free are two of the strongest motivators of people.

Looking at recent events we've had people panic buying toilet paper, yeast, flour, AMMO gas and now chlorine. Companies have to absolutely love the fear driven consumer. They'll pay the price because we may never see it again!

Fear/Panic induced shortages. It makes me shake my head in disbelief sometimes.

I went to Rural King yesterday to grab some chlorine to open my pool... all out. Sing read "due to chlorine shortage customers will be limited to two cases per day" Didn't panic. Just thought to myself what the best path forward is and bought a saltwater chlorine generator. Now I won't be part of the problem! During the heat of pandemic panic buying, I'd see yeast... I'd grab one or two packets if I needed some for making pizza dough. Be rational folks! buy what you need and leave some for others who need it too. Is that asking too much?

Fear and what?

Some of the behaviour seems to be people wanting to be social, to fit in with what others (who are in the know) are doing.
Kids in school want to be part of the in crowd. Adults with no real idea want to keep up with whatever.

Free.
See "Zero percent interest" for a point of reference. There is no such thing as zero percent interest but somehow car, construction equipment, compact utility manufacturers have made people believe that zero percent is real. Ignore that if you don't use the 0% you get a discount of $X... Its free money!!

NRA: they coming to take yer guns

How many guns have actually been taken in the last 20 years?

Okay, now I get you.
Funny how I remember someone telling me there was no such thing as a free lunch.
It is interesting however that many folks will spend money they haven't got on stuff they don't need, because their neighbor, or worse some celebrity says they should.
I suppose that too is fear of being left out.

Kind of my point. No one looks at things rationally.

That goes to people wanting to fit in or be liked or "hang with the popular crowd". Wear these shoes or pants or shirt or jewelry or glasses and you can be like them! Not sure it's fear driven but driven by a desire to fit in. I suppose the fear of not fitting in could be the motivator.

That wasn’t the case when I bought my Kubota 11 years ago. Cash, self finance, their 0% was all the same price. It was the only thing I’ve financed in 30 years.

Because the average person is a sheep. They are unable to think on their own or go against the herd and they look to others to think for them and protect them. The last 1.5 years of CV hysteria is exhibit one.

I suppose there are rare exceptions to the rule but 99.999% of the time 0% comes with an option of cash in lieu of..

Yes almost always. Typically on a vehicle it means you have to buy at MSRP, no negotiating the price.

Ask an Australian...

And the fact you have to go to another continent to find evidence is not indicative of the lack of foundation to the disarmament fear?

No. Look at Canada.

Tervuren 05-12-2021 11:12 AM

The disarmament fear is driven by real positions taken by people in office trying to tip the balance of power farther and farther away.

I did find myself wondering if I should go fill up the cars.
Decided I like walking and my bike, if gasoline dissapears, I'll still get around.
Will just take more trips and smaller loads.

Well, at least we are on the same continent now, getting warmer.

There is no point looking any where else, the American's relationship with the fire arm is a unique one. No where else is it fetishized like it is by the USA.

Technically the sheep are the group wearing a mask because they're told to. They did no research into the potential benefit. They just put it on to show how much they "care".
