If the train leaves the station at 6:00......

.... updated to today's real world problems:

If I'm driving to the Florida keys and back, 1200 miles each way, and my vehicle will get 12 mpg, how many gallons of gas should I carry in anticipation of shortages?

fastfredracing 05-13-2021 04:43 PM

A few rubbermaid storage totes should be sufficient

Scott R 05-13-2021 04:45 PM

Plastic bags, doubled bagged, about five five.

When the train, come in the station
I looked her in the eye
Well the train come in the station
And I looked her in the eye

Whoa, I felt so sad so lonesome
That I could not help but cry

You will need an IBC tote (the one in the metal cage) that is 275 gallons....this should cover you for the trip, just don't smoke !

Someone posted a picture of Someone gassing one of those totes the other day.

I actually own one, use it for jobsite water.

Doing the math you will need 100 gallons of gas each way.

Without knowing the capacity of your vehicle's fuel tank, it's hard to say exactly how much extra gas you would need to tote, to be totally independent of any gas stations along the way.

Of course, I would recommend just winging it - and for safety considerations not taking along any extra gas.

But the caveat to that recommendation is there are ways to toe extra gas safely - so I will leave that exception in place.

We have two. One for water, the other for fuel.

Long drive to the desert.

That should qualify for justifiable homicide around here at this time.....the balls on that MOFO if it was a recent pic.

rusnak 05-13-2021 07:37 PM

^If that was Diesel, it'd be a wee bit better. But that ain't no Diesel dispenser.

IDK about you guys, but no way would my bladder hold out for 1200 miles. I'd be stopping at least every 300-400 miles for either food or to walk around.

Joe Bob 05-13-2021 07:39 PM

I used to buy red dye diesel in 55 gallon drums.....had them delivered to my house.

rusnak 05-13-2021 07:44 PM

^ That's the way to do it. But you do not want to get caught burning that going down the freeway. I used to buy it at a cash discount for the carnival rides and my tractor until the place got condemned by the state of California for the damn high-speed rail tracks.

So the pipeline is back up, hopefully by next week this will be a nothingburger.

Find a car that does better gas mileage. My DD is sized to the seat 5 Europeans and has a decent hatchback trunk. At highway speeds(70 mph in the UK) in the summer I average about 66 miles)/ US gallon. This would reduce your consumption to less than 20 percent of what it currently is and you could just do the 1200 miles with one refuelling stop.
Obviously no one should attempt to drive 600 miles without a break, so you could do the journey with 3 or 4 stops
I don't know about the US law, but here you can legally carry a maximum of 1 Jerrycan of spare fuel(20 litres)in your vehicle , and store same at your house. Fuel stations will refuse you permission to fill non-approved containers with fuel( they will turn off the pump ). If you persisted by going to another pump I hope they would call the cops. Must people here don't like over self-entitlement, otherwise known as greed.
