I'm wondering, why do people call the Montreal Canadiens the Habs? Is that because they are habitual losers?

In French "Habitant (sp)" is how they refer to themselves ...Canadians = Habitants.

It refers to settlers of New France in the late 1600's and 1700's, Les Habitants, independent landowners, inhabitants.

If the name were derived from habitual losers, then Toronto would bear that moniker. Montreal is at the other end of the spectrum when counting total cups.

Toronto did okay, right up to 1967.
