Battery on/off switch.
Hi Guys,
I have a battery switch like this on my car for a long time, and it works fine. Today, looking at the item online and found that it is rated 500A. Our car is having 850 cracking amp battery. Does that mean if I have problem starting and keep it there cranking for a while, or if I start, turn off, start again, turn off and restart again several times, the switch will be hot and might be melted? lol. What amps does the starter pull when cranking?

Rule of thumb per the internet... 1 amp per cubic inch.

500 amps is more than enough - I think you are good.

I believe typical amperage draw from a starter during a start isn't any higher than something like 250A, so that's fine.

if this a 87 911, you're fine. Its not going to draw over 500amps starting

The battery disconnect in Post #1 is OK, just be sure the bolts are tight.
There are better ones though. I use a military-grade battery clamp on my forklift. And tractor. It requires that you crimp lugs onto the cables, sort of like in a building. They key is to make sure all connections are tight, or you can have problems. |
