What is this wooden board with various pegs?

Someone posted this on facebook. Apparently, someone is having renovations done in their house, and a contractor found this thing inside a wall. No one knows what it is. I assume that's just because they haven't asked here yet.

It looks a lot like a template to make wiring harnesses, only a home made version.

Interesting. One of the guesses on facebook was "board for bedding wiring."

Thanks for the quick and apparently accurate/correct response, by the way.

THis is an answer from FB which would seem to agree with what you've said.

Quote:
It's a jig for making a wiring harness for a specific piece of equipment. Previous homeowner was either in manufacturing themselves, or supplied wiring harnesses for a manufacturer.

The jig is useless once the specific item is no longer made, so they shoved it into the wall.
It's neat. I'd clean and condition it and do something with it. Someone mentioned turning it into a shadow box table. It's interesting, and I suspect cleaned and conditioned, the wood would probably be attractive.

I agree with Glenn.

One of the great things about being the Chief Government Pilot at the Sikorsky Factory was I got to visit all the various manufacturing areas.

The wiring harness shop was just incredible. There were large separate boards (a more modern version of your pic) for each type, model and series of helicopter being produced. The staff was mostly women who were incredibly meticulous.

Miles and miles of wiring. The wiring broads were huge.

Neat find, btw.

I'd clean that up, put a finish on it and hang it on a wall. Very cool

Exactly, hang it on a wall, or I also like the shadow box table idea.

Us guys might. I'm sure the woman of the house would put a kibosh on the idea though

Back when I was still in my early 20s I was still living in Montgomery, AL. I got up at 4:00 AM, drove to Atlanta and photographed a factory that made wiring harness. They started with large coils of copper wire, and pulled down to size the gauge they needed, put on the insulation of the zillions of different colors, stripes or dots and a crane took them over to humans pulling the wires off to length and making wiring harnesses for everything from motorcycles to semi tractors. Cars were the biggest customers.

Then I loaded all my equipment in my 914, and headed to Daytona Beach, FL and arrived just after 1:00 AM. I had to film a football game the next day in the evening.

It was facinating to see the manufacture of the wires, and the entire process. The factory was huge, and I worked my butt off shooting the pictures for their annual report.

Exactly what I was thinking, I'd probably just clean it and leave it the way it is.

Bending soaked/steamed wood trim?
As in boat/toy/instrument making etc?
It's not burnt or strong enough for metal/pipe.

The wiring harness sound like it. Never knew how they made that spaghetti.

Wire harness boards for the C130 are quite impressive and large/complex . I worked in Marietta and was PC on the C130/F22/F35/P3 Orion and C5 . Neat stuff

They must have used stick-on labels or had a good memory.
