Aloha, little buddy!
Tonight I said goodbye to my pal. He has had heart failure for several years and he had a hard time breathing on Tuesday. On Wednesday, he was lethargic all day and could barely get up. I told my sister (her dog), he needed to go and see the vet and be prepared for what needed to be done. She was busy with work all day and was on a call at 5 pm when he tried to stand up and his head was wobbly, then he dropped back on the ground. Told my sister to get off the phone and take care of her dog. I made an appt at the ER for 7:15 and we left the house at 7. Got there and texted we arrived. One of the aides came and grabbed Soba, and took him in the ER. An hour later, my sister gets a call and she goes very quiet and gave the phone to me. The doctor said they could operate on him, but most likely he wouldn't survive the operation. I told the doctor, make sure he feels no pain and is not suffering and we'll be in when he is put down.
Aloha, little buddy! ![]()

Absolutely the worst part of pet ownership... making that call. It's never easy. Sorry for the loss.

Bryan - thanks for stepping in and being your sister's dog's advocate here. I'm glad Soba had you as her human uncle.
As mentioned, making this decision is one of the toughest things one will ever have to do in one's life. But it's actually the highest form of love, as well. I'm very sorry for your loss but obviously you did the right thing for Soba's sake and no doubt you will see her again in the afterlife....

These threads always make my eyes wet...sorry for your loss.
I'm now wondering which pain is worse. The loss of a loved pet or realizing you'll never have another. Because of our ages, we've decided no more...hate to admit it, but odds are another pet would outlive us. We lost our final pet last November...still hurts.

I feel blessed we only had to have one put to sleep and those are tough. The vet came to the house and I got to scratch her (the lab, not the vet) ears as she passed.
Our others have all passed in their sleep, though our last lab was sudden as the vet had just told us how healthy she was. Aneurysm maybe. Our condolences and good on you for watching over Soba.

It is hard to express in words how sorry I am for your Soba's passing. People come in and out of our lives, but we gauge our life by the dogs present at the time. From whatever wonderful place they come, we humans must eventually give them back. Farewell Soba.

Anyone who thinks they are not I do not want to know.
Soba, what a great name, got what every dog wants: To be part of a family, to paraphrase Donne, a piece of the main. Well done, WPO.

I know the pain, Bryan. I suspect you've been there before as well. Clearly Soba brought you and your sister a lot of joy, and I'm sure he had a good home and a wonderful life. Aloha is the perfect word for this.
Your choice saddens me, and I would like to see you reconsider. You know the trade-off, but go for the light. Don't take the sure path of less joy. Maybe get a rescue with some miles on it. Make arrangements for the dog if you can't care for it. Even if you can't, give a dog a home now. Take the bird in hand.
