They look nice. Good job.

Looks good, Hobie! That's a lot of work. Respect!

I replaced some of my switch covers with Tiki themed ones I bought - similar to this one:

Not for everyone but I like them!

Are you also painting the screws?

They wanted to keep them because they are original to the house and look nice and that is why we are painting them and I am also clear coating them as well.

To put in perspective, I have 75 of them from the main level of the house and that isn't even all of them and there is still the bottom level. That's a lot of covers that would add up if replacing all of them. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e7b30dcead.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...25f8f5408d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7ad3164025.jpg

Those are pretty cool!!!
The covers I am painting were almond, the satin white really brings out the detail a bit more. Thanks to everyone for the compliments.

Agree. They are worth painting. Nice job.

If we find some pre-painted screws then we will use those, otherwise, the tops of the screws will be touched up to match. A little dab'L do ya. Lol.

I'd ask the guy at the store if he's had any similar complaints about that can and formulation/color. It may be thicker and require a lot more shaking before spraying.

Also, an old trick modellers use is to let the can sit in a sink of warm or hot water for 30 minutes or so before using. Shake well and go.

That particular formulation (satin) may also require frequent pauses and spraying with the can upside down to clear the nozzle.

Might also be a good idea to run all this by their toll-free number folks.

Good ideas. I had actually let the cans warm up in the sun. The first can sounded like it was going to explode like it had way too much pressure. The second was doing okay until it started spitting and dripping. I think a lot of the problem is that the paint seems to collect on part of the top that is directly over the spray nozzle. The paint collects there and then drips ruining what you have just sprayed.

a while back my wife wanted to buy a new framed mirror to replace the one we had, because the (simulated) guilded frame didn't match anymore and she wanted more of an antique silver look.

I thought that was a gross waste of money so I bought a rattle-can identical to the one pictured in the OP even though I was skeptical of the new-fangled nozzle.
I was pleasantly surprised by the nice wide fan pattern, even and predictable and easy to get smooth coverage. Closest thing to a real spray gun I've come across.
It worked so well that I was happy from the anticipation of when all rattle-cans will have this new style and will work so much better than what we are used to.

It surprised me when I tread this thread and saw you had just the opposite result.
Did I just get lucky or did you get a bad can?

I painted a couple of things with their metallic finish and I was shocked how good it was. I wonder if the metallic is thinner and sprays better then the white?

My brother-in-law sprayed some satin black and the can dripped and leaked all over his hand also. Not sure if the satin paints are thicker or not. I've sprayed some metallic burnt amber with this same top and it did seem to do okay now that I think about it, but still, shouldn't have such issues with spraying the other colors.

You won't find those on the shelf today. Don't break any. And they are brittle.

Tell me you've got those in a kitchen with avocado colored appliances!!!

john70t 06-02-2021 09:45 AM

I've had those cans drip as well. Made a mess. Satin black iirc.

Once those are clogged, the can is done.
These work better:

Don't have to buy them. You can take any magazine picture or paper print pattern and spray glue/clearcoat/trim to the regular plates.

I once made a mistake and bought a bunch of wooden ones ($4-5 ea) without prepping them.
They eventually curled and cracked and also interfered with some types of plugs.
Looked good though.

I've spray painted a lot of screw heads. Easy, just push them into corrugated cardboard so they stand up.

Or buy the white ones. ;)

Haha! A 10 pack of white switch plates, with screws, at HD is less than $6. How much is your time worth?

Geez, go back and read up if you care to do so.
I am doing this as a favor for my brother-in-law, ya know, family helping family, that sort of thing. The covers are original to the house which was built in 1974 and have some nice detail, they were originally almond, they want them to be white, therefore as a favor, I am painting them satin white and clear coating them also. We all help each other out with projects all the time and I volunteered to paint some light fixtures, vent registers, and the outlet and switch covers.
