Found him floating this am.
Either from old age (10yrs) or the 34 degree temp the last few mornings.

Now...what to do with him?

He had only been dead since last night and the turtles had already shortened his tail fin up by an inch.

It's on the burn pile right now. It'll be gone by morning..I'm sure.

Poor little fella. I'd bury him somewhere where he won't be disturbed.

I remember when Big died. I cried for days.

Bury him under/by a tree in the garden, so his passing will benefit something else living.

I remember after pan-fishing (blue-gills) with my father...the scaling and gutting chore.
When done, he would take the bucket of guts and a shovel....open the ground next to my Mothers rose bush, and pour it in.

She had the greatest rose bushes in the whole neighborhood!

We just bury the larger fish in our compost pile. The worms do a great job of turning it into fertilizer. Flushing them just send them to the sewage plant where the solids have to be scraped off and make more work for the treatment plant.

I have had to bury a 4 foot snake that evidently ate a mouse that was poisoned as it died in my back yard. We don't use poison. We recently had to bury a humongous frog. It was the largest frond I have ever seen. It was a wet skined frond, not a land toad. And just yesterday my wife heard a lot of birds squawking and wings fluttering. All of a sudden a dove sized bird dropped onto the driveway dead. Our dogs really wanted a taste of it. It was certainly dead, so it too went to the compost pile.

In a few weeks only the bones are left to dissolve into the soil. When we turn the compost there is never any evidence of bones or bodies.

Top of compost pile. Something should find him a tasty morsel and recycle him.

I dump all my cleaned fish carcasses in the woods across the road from my fishing retreat. Between the coons, eagles, crows/ravens, vultures and other scavengers, they are gone in a day or so. Buggers cleaned up over 100 last week when I was there.

Checked this morning and it's gone.
Raccoons are plentiful around here.

A racoon funeral. That's quite a good solution...

This is Big in happier days. She got to be about 18. She was the main personality amongst the goldfish. When she saw me she would tear around the pond full speed mimicking feeding to put the idea across to me. The other guys would scatter knowing she certainly wasn't looking where she was going but was doing her best to attract attention to herself.
