Check out this swimming pool

In London. I know for a fact! I could not swim in that pool LOL

GH85Carrera 06-01-2021 10:59 AM

Looks like fun. I would happily swim in it.

stevej37 06-01-2021 11:11 AM

Kids will...they have no fears...yet.

masraum 06-01-2021 11:39 AM

I used to have a pretty good view of this one from our apt. It's on the 40th floor (500ft up).

I could probably swim in the pool as the water would make looking down difficult to focus. But no way I could stand at the railing or look over the edge.

Bob Kontak 06-01-2021 12:46 PM

What's the largest font I can type NFW?

stevej37 06-01-2021 01:45 PM

The CN tower in Toronto has a plexi-glass floor on the bottom of the first top floor.
When I was there, kids were laying face down on it and laughing.
I found it hard to even step on it....147 floors up.

herr_oberst 06-01-2021 01:50 PM

I'd totally skinny dip in either of those pools.

Steve Carlton 06-01-2021 01:54 PM

I'd toss a Baby Ruth in there!

sc_rufctr 06-01-2021 02:07 PM

:)

Great but how do you make a piece of glass that big and heavy?

stevej37 06-01-2021 02:13 PM

^^^ Plexi-glass

Steve Carlton 06-01-2021 02:25 PM

What happens when somebody shoots that thing with a high powered rifle?

drcoastline 06-01-2021 02:53 PM

Why would you build that?

Looks pretty uncomfortable to me but I like cool swimming pools. One of my friends has a pool with a glass wall in the backyard that is also the wall in the subterranean exercise studio. Basically, you can be on the Peloton or exercise bike and watch the kids swim in the pool at the same time. I'll try to get a picture the next time I go over.

vash 06-01-2021 07:13 PM

I would sit Indian-style naked on the bottom of that pool.

Drbraunsr 06-01-2021 07:18 PM

Pass the eye-bleach, please....

smadsen 06-01-2021 07:19 PM

Sure! What could possibly go wrong?

speeder 06-01-2021 07:24 PM

Here is a pic from my friend's pool, looking from inside the house. A bit safer. :)

Probably that 3D printing craze. Is causing this!

Hey now, can't say that anymore. It's criss-cross applesauce.

Mack198 01-11-2022 03:04 AM

Hii My friend also consists of a small backyard pool which he had recently installed. It is a saltwater pool and of dimensions 10 feet wide and 50 feet long. We all spent our weekends inside the pool, especially in the evening. Next time I will upload the pitcher inside the pool with my iPhone 8 Plus
Thanks!

I "learned" that last year sometime. < big sigh >

ckelly78z 01-14-2022 05:43 AM

A pool in London ? Tt would have to be heated with virtually no sunshine ever. I could probably swim in it, but prefer more privacy.

stevej37 01-14-2022 05:47 AM

skip to 1:50 for the floor
When I was there...it took a real effort for me to take that first step onto the glass part.

Every once in a while, one of these engineering marvels fails.

Then what?

That was exciting. Possible anywhere. ^That^ one was in Brazil. I suspect the USA and UK are probably far more over engineered to resist failure. I would think that Brazil may not have the same safety margin. I wouldn't expect the same kind of safety margins anywhere south of the US border or in China either.

Engineering failures aren’t limited to Third World countries.

One of the biggest design flaws that I can recall was in a high-rise building in Manhattan that had a sizable chance of coming down because of wind loads. If I remember correctly, a grad student first discovered the problem, which was confirmed by the original engineers and the building was quietly retrofitted (quickly, too) without the public being advised of the potential problem.

javadog 01-14-2022 06:15 AM

This is the one:

The Citicorp tower design flaw that could have wiped out the skyscraper: 99% Invisible by Roman Mars.

herr_oberst 01-14-2022 06:17 AM

Waited for the car to float, not disappointed. Happy Friday.

Florida

Pedestrian bridge collapse
Condo tower collapse

Texas

The same company that designed the pedestrian bridge in FL designed and was constructing the new bridge over the Houston Ship Channel. The design was reviewed and found to be fatally flawed. A new company is starting over.

There is a TV show called Engineering Disasters. They covered many buildings, bridges and highway collapses. There are indeed many that are all from poor engineering. Some from causes that were never thought about and some just from a disaster that was beyond the design specs.

The Houston Ship Channel Bridge was covered last summer on Engineering Disasters.

Somethings are "Failure of Imagination". But most would have been prevented with a little insight. As Engineers, we have to think about all the ways something can be abused, misused or unexpected natural factors.

No way am I getting in that pool. Watch Jason Statham to see why:

hahaha.

Jason Statham kicks azz!

There's gotta be MUCH easier ways that that to compromise one of those pools. remotely detonated shape charge seems like a possibility, and wouldn't require you to be completely visible from above and below in the process.
