How do you interpret the word "most"?

A very subjective descriptive term... I know :)

Eric Hahl 06-08-2021 08:50 AM

I go with 75% minimum.

blucille 06-08-2021 08:51 AM

to me...

a couple is 2
a few is 3, 4 or 5
some can be anything depending on the sample size ("I'd like some of those apples"--if there are only 4 apples, I want 2 or 3 of them, if there are 60 apples, I might want 40...I don't want all of them, and I may not want "most" of them.

So, "Most" is more than 50 percent, but not "all" and probably not "almost all"

in a sample size of 6, Most is 5. in a sample of 10, most can be 7, 8 or 9--although, 9 would be "all but one", or "almost all"

let's go percentage.

it has to be greater than 50%. it should be greater than 60% (or else, that would be, just a little more than half)
but less than 90%

very specifically to ME---most is 65-85% once the same size is large enough (+/- 50 items).

flatbutt 06-08-2021 08:51 AM

Largest, greatest, unsurpassed, a great big bunch. An additional modifier as in most ricky tik.

Rikao4 06-08-2021 09:03 AM

enough until they change the answer..
words don't matter much any more..
Rape is rough sex in the news now..
Burglary is..'new user'...
Stupid folk have 'rights'....

pavulon 06-08-2021 09:24 AM

50.5% or more.

GH85Carrera 06-08-2021 09:25 AM

It all depends on context.

id10t 06-08-2021 09:46 AM

Depends on the raw numbers being talked about as well as context.

ckelly78z 06-08-2021 09:55 AM

60%-90%

sammyg2 06-08-2021 11:16 AM

Say "most" three times

most, most most.

Quick, what do you put in a toaster?

you put bread in. You take toast out.

masraum 06-08-2021 11:21 AM

Hmm

majority = >50%

most is probably best defined by CKelly78Z above, 60-90%, although you could probably make it 60-99%.

51%, I probably wouldn't call most. I'd probably call it majority or "little more than half."
60%, maybe, might be most
70% or more, sure, definitely most
95-100% I'd probably say "almost all" or maybe "vast majority"

LEAKYSEALS951 06-08-2021 11:22 AM

I'm right more of the time.

Bill Douglas 06-08-2021 11:30 AM

Fairly much all. Haha, to further make it subjective.

School kid "I got most of the answers right" means he got 51%

School kid at home ate most of the chocolate biscuits means he left one.

MBAtarga 06-08-2021 12:09 PM

Never mind - I thought the thread title was "Moist" :)

Rikao4 06-08-2021 12:31 PM

I'm offended..
can't be right..
while it is..
I deem it wrong..
2 and 2 = whatever you dumb folks want..
upside...
seems queers cant figure out which hole is the right one now..

I think this is the most correct answer .... after Sammy's ;).

"Most" could be a truly miniscule amount of the total, but like many, I usually think of a bigly chunk too when I hear it used.

Next thread topic is "bigly" :D

thor66 06-08-2021 12:57 PM

Naw... but I don't know what "some" is, so there :)!

Esel Mann 06-08-2021 01:03 PM

49%. As in alMOST. Hehe

Why not 50.4%?

KFC911 06-08-2021 01:15 PM

And why not .001% ;)?

thor66 06-08-2021 01:16 PM

it really is 50% + 1

Not really... think about it.

Bill Douglas 06-08-2021 01:24 PM

50% and a little bit more.

herr_oberst 06-08-2021 02:38 PM

Depends on the number of categories. Just because most of us like vanilla doesn't mean that vanilla has more than 50% of the likes.

That's all you need to know about what "most" means.

sc_rufctr 06-08-2021 04:29 PM

Anything above 55%. :)

For the most part.

Rusty Heap 06-08-2021 05:13 PM

More than a few.

doug_porsche 06-08-2021 07:07 PM

Most is anything more than half.

I see what you mean. More of us can like vanilla than any other flavor, but if the other 21 flavors form a coalition of flavors that amount to, say, 80% of the total, vanilla can still be most popular with 20% of the vote. They don't have the most enthusiasts, but they have more than the fans of any other single flavor.

Thanks. that explains why I was ridiculed by the other kids. I LOVED vanilla and got called names by all the chocolate/strawberry/hokey pokey/lime loving kids.

Actually, each answer is correct since the OP asked how we interpret the word ‘most’.
If one would say he interprets ‘most’ as ‘less than half’, that too would be a correct answer… :). (Lame, I know)

Bill Douglas 06-08-2021 09:21 PM

it's just an abbreviation of mostest.

mostest, meaning the bigglyest amount.

wdfifteen 06-09-2021 04:27 AM

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1623241516.jpg

Looking at your graph it's clear that what "most" means is how you ask the question.

Most people do no prefer red.

But red is the most preferred color.

herr_oberst 06-09-2021 05:13 AM

Patrick, that is a most excellent observation!

Oh, sorry, I misread the OP

doug_porsche 06-09-2021 08:27 AM

This just brought back a memory of my favorite news paper story tag line.

The bold print headline for the story, out of Australia, said:
Most students above average in math!

Hadn't thought about that headline for years.

I love the concept that more than half the kids are better in math than half of all of the kids.

mattdavis11 06-09-2021 08:48 AM

I got her panties off most of the way. That doesn't tell the whole story. Did you slide them to the side, then get tangled up in them?
