Teriyaki Chicken and Beef... the OG
I saw a mention of teriyaki in the salad thread and thought I'd share these photos from yesterday. Teriyaki Chicken & Beef combo from Toshi's Teriyaki Grill in Mill Creek, WA, a few minutes north of Seattle.
Toshi Kasahara is the man who brought Teriyaki to Seattle in 1976 and helped turn it in to a regional specialty. If anything can approach the ubiquity of starbucks in the Seattle area, it would be Teriyaki joints. Most of the Toshi's franchise locations are long gone or renamed now, but Toshi himself opened this restaurant in 2013, and still works there today... even in his 70s. They are take-out only these days, so the only reasonable option is to chow down right away in your car, but no other place that I know of has teriyaki beef that is still a bit pink in the middle and chicken that is so moist (not at all rubbery like the guys that throw frozen chicken straight on the grill). If you find yourself in Mill Creek - just a few miles from the Boeing plant in Everett - do yourself a favor and pick up some Teriyaki from Toshi... who knows how much longer he'll be working. https://toshisgrill.com/

I love me some Teriyaki chicken! But Denis and Webby told me I have to watch out for the soy sauce because it'll make my twig n berries shrivel up.

This was such a surprise to me when I moved to the Seattle area, but is 100% true. Seattle leads the USA in teriyaki, pho, banh mi, and in putting cream cheese on random foodstuffs.

I was in Seattle back in 2001. It seemed like there were teriyaki places everywhere. It seemed like there were more of those than coffee and fast-food combined.
I went back two or three years ago and hardly saw any. I was really disappointed because I wanted to go to one. I love teriyaki and yakitori. |

Hell! At my age so can I. After 26 years of marriage it's not like I'm using them

Dude, I used to work next door to a Toshi's in Lynnwood at a stereo shop - across from the Nissan dealer.. I love that place.
I used to know the people there- some dude used to come in, order beef skewers, put them in hot dog buns w/ ketchup. It's practically an institution. That's right we used to call it the football rice.

Toshi brought lunch sometimes when I worked at University Porsche-Audi, probably about 1976. He had a 930 if I remember right. Good stuff.

I remember going to the original location on lower Queen Anne when I was a kid. My brother took me. It had a kind of cult following even back then.
I also remember drinking beer in the parking lot next to Toshis before high school football games at Memorial Stadium. But that's another story.... The original Toshis is long gone now and the neighborhood is so much different. And not in a good way.

Yakitori seems to be growing in popularity, but in a trendy/fancy way, which is sad. Someone needs to bring back cheap drinking food here...
