you think there is such a thing as working TOO FAST?
i dont have the best memory. not un-fun stuff. in one ear, promptly, out the other.
i make myself to-do lists. works for me. another thing that works for me is to haul ass and get it done and off my plate ASAP. that way i dont have to remember it. i recall in the book THE JUNGLE, they would really frown on the person that worked too fast. it made the rest look bad and that would result in everyone having to work faster...so they would stink-eye the rabbit to pump the brakes. (i think they beat his ass, actually) nothing is overly difficult. just sit down, start (starting is 80% of everything anyways), before you know it, project is done or issue resolved. this applies at home as well, for example. i cannot sit down to watch TV if i know there are dirty dishes to be done. i have to get it done before i can relax. my wife tells me to chill. eff it today, i am going to call it quits at 1:45..i am done with my work. tomorrow is now kinda slow. easy peasy. wish i had a TV at work. hahah.

When I was a kid (10? 11?) the kindly neighbor man across the street asked me if I wanted to make a few bucks digging so he could repair a ditch gate.. Probably half a days work for a little kid.
I got started, he came by a couple of times to see how the work was progressing. About the third time he dropped by, he told me I was working too fast and I needed to slow it down if I wanted to make enough money to make the job worthwhile to me. I was being paid by the hour. (What I didn't mention until now, he was THE head of the Teamsters for the region. That was his job and if his lifestyle was any indication, he was pretty damn successful) So, to the OP's point, yes you can work too fast, unless you're lazy like me and just want to get the job done so you can go hang out with your peeps.

If too fast leads to shortcuts then yeah maybe.

Regarding hurrying to finish a job, did you ever wonder why, if there's not enough time to do it right, there's always enough time to do it over?

Being a flat rate mechanic has really fked with my head in this manner .
I have had to work really hard to not put myself up against a timer for every little task that I do . That is why I enjoy working at home so much . There is no flat rate time to mow the grass, wash a car, paint a room etc. I still, like to get on a job, and work proficiently at a good clip, with as minimal standing around as possible . You can definitely work too fast . If you are making mistakes, and taking short cuts, your probably trying to hard, and it will most likely come back to bite you later

I remember working nights as a machinist at a large aerospace firm. Every Wednesday night the cleaning crew would come in and wax the floor. We had to wait around for a couple of hours for them to do their work and the wax to dry. I couldn't get over the wasted time and brought it up to my boss. That didn't sit well with the 'regular' night shift guys as they considered it one of the 'perks' of working nights. I eventually went on days in another shop on campus.

The guy who has been working for me lately (the one who got shot in the face) works too fast. He keeps me running just feeding him tools etc and setting up the next job. I work harder when he’s here helping than I do when I’m working alone, but we’re getting a bunch of stuff done. He has taken a few days off and I’m thankful for the chance to rest.

I work too fast but the jobs still take as long as ever to finish.
Nowdays I’ve learned allot of the tricks to work VERY efficiently. Problem is I’ll stand there and stare at the project as long as it takes to make up the difference. |
