New ones cheap enough. I once got a Ford dealership service advisor in trouble. Took the Mustang in for a tire rotate & oil change. At the price, couldn't see going through the hassle of doing it myself...so, I asked about changing the cabin air filter being changed. I was told my car didn't have one. Knowing better, I stopped ar a NAPA on my way hime, bought one..changed myself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXBKl6mVKp0 Later got a "how'd we do" questionnaire email from Ford. Gave 'em a good rating byt mentioned why I changed my own cabin air filter. Went back to the same dealership some months later, noticed that service advisor was no longer there. Hmmmm. I really hope I didn't have anything to do with that...he seemed like a nice young guy. Probably his first job out of tech school. Anyway..yes., Change that cabin air filter! I shoot for once a year, usually after the seasonal rains begin here. Always amazes me how much dust and krud it catches during the summer months.

It's as easy as vacuuming out the floor mats. No reason to buy a new one....unless it's torn.

Just replaced the cabin filter in my 2005 Cayenne. Last time ie was done was 7 years ago. It was dirty but not like the ones posted here.
The tech article Wayne wrote said it will improve A/C temps/airflow.

Thanks for the reminder. Nothing has been done to mine in 4 years. Looked up how to change the filter on my Tundra. The dealer wanted over $50 P&L to do it so I thought it must be some horrendous job. Looks like it will take about 2 minutes.

My 14 F150 doesn’t have one. My heated/cooled seats have one, but I’ve never used it, so no need to replace it.

I try to remember to change ours on a yearly basis, especially if we've had any major fires in the area. They are good at stopping ash.

Thanks for the reminder, Rick. I've done mine on the Silverado a couple times, so know the routine.

Funny ha ha.
I sent the pic to the lady I bought the RAV from and she said my mpg is going to be compromised. I told her specifically what it was and she owned it for five years before me and never looked at it. I've had it for three after her and looked first time yesterday.

I've never changed a cabin air filter in my life... didn't know they even existed. Appears my '04 F150 doesn't have one.... mebbe none of my cars have ever had one... I dunno.
But I'm usually a windows down guy unless it's raining.... |

Inspired by this thread, I just changed the filter in my Mazda 5. Not as easy as I wished, but now it's done.

I just checked mine. 2 minute job.. A few broken leaves and misc crap on top. Filter didn't look too bad so I banged it on the ground and a cloud of dust erupted. I will get a new one tomorrow.
Thanks for the heads up. Last edited by Sooner or later; 07-02-2021 at 12:55 PM.. |

Checked mine today. Two minute job, a few bugs but nothing else. Blew it out with compressed air and put it back in.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad I didn't let Toyota do it.

I am not so much concerned about breathing the dust/pollen/crud but it's nice not to . To me the big advantage is keeping all that crap out of the evaporator . I use the AC ten months out of the year , last thing I want to do is remove half the dash to clean or replace it .

Now that you've taken away it's nest you'll have to provide it with an alternate nest.
Maybe some cotton with some small worms For food.

To be safe, I would recommend replacing the filter rather than cleaning it. I believe they can trap mold and over time that can contaminate the ventilation system.

I needed to temporarily patch a hole in the drivers side floor of my 66 VW Microbus. So I cut a trapezoidal piece of metal from the junk hood of a GMC truck. The floor is white, the piece from the hood of the truck is black. Got it screwed down in place, took a piece of blue painters tape and a sharpie and on the tape it now displays "Cabin Air Filter 216.435.999E". I'll have the rubber floor mat over it when it is done.
