Check/change your cabin air filters
Wow I have been neglecting the cabin air filters in my 2001 GMC pickup ☹️ . I am making a long distance trip starting tomorrow and I decided to check them . A fairly large pile of leaves/sticks/other was in there . These trucks have two filters side by side. Very easy to replace I expect air flow and performance will be improved . For twenty bucks I will replace more often . The filters had a wall of pollen on them 😁
The evaporator looked emmaculate so the filters did their job . I vacuumed it well and installed the two filters . Total time less than ten minutes . Keep em clean Boyz 😊 |
Good reminder!
They are often overlooked and WOW have we had pollen by the buckets this year- washed my truck early in the AM and a layer of pollen dust was obvious 2 hours later |
Airflow increases bigly when you swap 'em out.

I keep looking for the cabin filters for my 911 and El Camino and can't find them. I think they are next to the ABS module.
I changed to one in my wife's Macan. After three years and 17,000 miles it was pretty clean. Very easy to change. |
I have changed it in my Boxster and my wife's XC90 but never the truck . They have been in there at least six years !!! Shame on me ☹️

I get to smell burned off oil in my P/U. LOL.
Right out the hood, into the air grille :) |
My Fit is super easy..drop the glove box cover and slide it out. It always has some dead bees and dirt. I shake it out and use the shop vac on it.....good as new!
My 98 Prelude has a/c....but no cabin filter. |
The AC in the El Camino is the same unit they put in the station wagon. Likely inadequate for a huge station wagon, but in the tiny cabin of the Elky it is wonderful overkill. My commute was 12 minutes to get home. The Elky had to sit in the full sun in the summer and on a 100+ day the interior was 140 degrees. Usually before the end of my 12 minute commute I had to turn the ac temp up as I was cold on the 100 degree days. No place to put a cabin filter.

Just took the truck to pick up a U-Haul trailer for my trip , a very noticeable improvement in air volume through the vents. I have to think improved air flow will help the evaporator on long run times . I am driving from Georgia to NC then NY and back in 3 days 😜 . The forecast is going to put the AC to a good test !

Well, let's just say thanks to rfuerst911sc for posting this thread.
I think DGIH (Dear God in Heaven) describes mine. Vent airflow doubled. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1625176730.jpg |

^^^ Yeah that's about what mine looked like . Glad I could help 😃

Pleasantly surprised that supertech filter from Walmart is made in the USA ... |

-Replace burnt out fan transistor-relay thingy, which is a total pain to get to. -Replace it again when it burns up again after about 20 minutes. And replace the fan. -Then take about 30 seconds and clean the filter. |
My lbz don't have filters. GM only put them in a certain years. Scratching my head wondering why?
|
^^^ Also...don't need to buy a new one...vacuum the old...good to go.
Post #12 looks just like mine when cleaning it. |

New ones cheap enough. I once got a Ford dealership service advisor in trouble. Took the Mustang in for a tire rotate & oil change. At the price, couldn't see going through the hassle of doing it myself...so, I asked about changing the cabin air filter being changed. I was told my car didn't have one. Knowing better, I stopped ar a NAPA on my way hime, bought one..changed myself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXBKl6mVKp0 Later got a "how'd we do" questionnaire email from Ford. Gave 'em a good rating byt mentioned why I changed my own cabin air filter. Went back to the same dealership some months later, noticed that service advisor was no longer there. Hmmmm. I really hope I didn't have anything to do with that...he seemed like a nice young guy. Probably his first job out of tech school. Anyway..yes., Change that cabin air filter! I shoot for once a year, usually after the seasonal rains begin here. Always amazes me how much dust and krud it catches during the summer months. |
It's as easy as vacuuming out the floor mats. No reason to buy a new one....unless it's torn.

Just replaced the cabin filter in my 2005 Cayenne. Last time ie was done was 7 years ago. It was dirty but not like the ones posted here.
The tech article Wayne wrote said it will improve A/C temps/airflow. |

Thanks for the reminder. Nothing has been done to mine in 4 years. Looked up how to change the filter on my Tundra. The dealer wanted over $50 P&L to do it so I thought it must be some horrendous job. Looks like it will take about 2 minutes. :)

My 14 F150 doesn’t have one. My heated/cooled seats have one, but I’ve never used it, so no need to replace it.

I try to remember to change ours on a yearly basis, especially if we've had any major fires in the area. They are good at stopping ash.
|
Thanks for the reminder, Rick. I've done mine on the Silverado a couple times, so know the routine.
Safe travels, sir! :) |

I sent the pic to the lady I bought the RAV from and she said my mpg is going to be compromised. I told her specifically what it was and she owned it for five years before me and never looked at it. I've had it for three after her and looked first time yesterday. |
I've never changed a cabin air filter in my life... didn't know they even existed. Appears my '04 F150 doesn't have one.... mebbe none of my cars have ever had one... I dunno.
But I'm usually a windows down guy unless it's raining.... |
Inspired by this thread, I just changed the filter in my Mazda 5. Not as easy as I wished, but now it's done.
|
I just checked mine. 2 minute job.. A few broken leaves and misc crap on top. Filter didn't look too bad so I banged it on the ground and a cloud of dust erupted. I will get a new one tomorrow.
Thanks for the heads up. |
Checked mine today. Two minute job, a few bugs but nothing else. Blew it out with compressed air and put it back in.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm glad I didn't let Toyota do it. |

I am not so much concerned about breathing the dust/pollen/crud but it's nice not to . To me the big advantage is keeping all that crap out of the evaporator . I use the AC ten months out of the year , last thing I want to do is remove half the dash to clean or replace it .

Changed out today. Looks like I have a rat looking to make a nest. |
Now that you've taken away it's nest you'll have to provide it with an alternate nest.
Maybe some cotton with some small worms For food. |
To be safe, I would recommend replacing the filter rather than cleaning it. I believe they can trap mold and over time that can contaminate the ventilation system.

I needed to temporarily patch a hole in the drivers side floor of my 66 VW Microbus. So I cut a trapezoidal piece of metal from the junk hood of a GMC truck. The floor is white, the piece from the hood of the truck is black. Got it screwed down in place, took a piece of blue painters tape and a sharpie and on the tape it now displays "Cabin Air Filter 216.435.999E". I'll have the rubber floor mat over it when it is done. :D
