They supply most hand tools needed, as well as light power tools, chippers, etc. licensed, insured. Only way to go. No way are we hiring anyone off of the street. I have had the same two laborers on my projects for over 6 years now. They know what I want and what to alert me about. I tip them occasionally as well.

Yep. that's the only way to go. Let someone else be responsible. Those guys off the street are sometimes really bad news. I don't know what I am charged per hour, but its normally per job for demo and I am sure its a lot more then 20 per hour that's for sure. Whatever he pay their guys, its not my problem but interesting to find out.

Why hire illegals and take that risk on your liability?

chapo 07-06-2021 07:15 PM

guess we were typing at the same time!

The 35$ is for a foreman, I should clarify, and he speaks English and drives the others in a van. worth it.

Again, my opinion is that that rate is too high. I hear there's some type of building nearby where they hang out coaching the day laborers to band together asking for a certain wage.

I got talking with a young men today installing solar on my job today. He's busting his ass on the roof carrying panels, drilling holes and pulling cables. I asked him on his water break about his pay. Yep, he's getting pay at 18.50 per hour. He's happy with a job where he can learn and move up, make more money. There's a problem if the illegals without skills are asking/making over 20 bucks while this hard working kid, assume he's an American, speaking without any accent is making less. But he saw the potential of knowledge and skill that will make him lots more.

Wait...aren't you an immigrant without a lot of education making a good living in Los Angeles in the construction trade? No disrespect meant but based on your written word here, it doesn't seem like English is even close to your native language. What am I missing here?

That's your assumption, right, based on the type of work I do? So what's are you missing or confused about? I don't understand? Explain? Am I suppose to side with all the illegal immigrants due some type of hardship you think I experienced? I don't see us as a trade, its a small business and we run it like one. No different then selling wholesale bearings or wedding dresses.

We spoke on the phone once. I have no accent and speaks properly and clearly. My writing skill has always been piss poor and typing skill is even worst and I know it is due to my laziness and never proofreading. It gets cleaned up when necessary. I grew up here since the 2nd grade but never paying much attention at school. Sloppy with my school work to say the least. Finished college, with a degree in Industrial design and management with a minor in woodworking, like many here. I just couldn't wait to pursue my dream in the construction industry. Wanted that since the 9th grade. Living my dream.

Edit:
Speaking of Heidi Fleiss. We went to HS together. She was in my driver ed class sitting over in the next roll. She has asked me to do it myself many times when I asked to see her work.

No, I wasn't. You're confused...kind of like when you told that guy that I lived in a garage. And I'm not in L.A. right now, I'm in WI.

Show me that. I never even a thought that you lived in a garage. Who's confused?

Apparently you haven't been in WI long enough. ;):D

And you crossed the line of decency with this:

I met Jeff many years ago at a Tesla group test drive. Very well spoken and polite.

Well, I apologize for the assumption but it was not meant as an insult…I merely thought that you were from another land. I never thought that you were unintelligent and I’m sorry for any offense caused or taken. I’ll be more careful in the future.
