Stand up paddle boarding - too old to take it up?

Looks like fun but I’m wondering if a chubster, 57 y/o might break his neck or drown trying it out. Asking for a friend.

I say go for it.

You, or your imaginary friend are not too old. Never too old for stand up paddleboarding. I've been doing it for 8 years or so and love it.

You can take it easy or go as hard out as you like. I kind of like just getting out there and being in my own space and mindset, haha, getting in the zone. Sometimes I feel like hooking into big waves, and it easy to catch big ones with a SUP. But 90% of the time I like just cruising on it. I also like going down fast flowing rivers on it LOL

GF read in a women's magazine it's good for your abb's and she got into it. We have his and hers paddleboards how corny is that.

Here is a buddy Lauren and me.

55 here, will be 56 in September and Love paddle boarding!!! Choosing the right board will depend on your weight. We have a 12 foot board and a 10 foot board. The 12 footer is a little wider which makes it more stable than the shorter one. I say go for it, you won't be disappointed.
Try some umbrella sailing!!!

Pics taken at Lake Martin, Alabama and
Destin, Florida.

12" boards maintain momentum. Short boards are fun in waves and easy to do fancy turns on. But it's almost - paddle stroke, stop, paddle stroke stop.... A Pita when you want to get out there and just cruise on the thing. 9' and 10' are somewhere in between. See if you can try out some. Those skinny ones that look like a kayak are fast. A bit tippy, but fast.

Go for it! Get a big board. Paddle on your knees until you feel balanced and then start standing up.

Rubbing my hand reading this. Taking my boys to mammoth next week and we will be renting them at the lake if they are available instead of Kayaks.

These things look like fun, they use the mirage drive system like they have in some of their kayaks. They have handle bars that make it easier to balance and there are levers on the handle bars that control the rudder for turning. Super cool!!! Looks like some good cardio also.

Anything that keeps you active is a good thing. Don't think about it... "Just do it"

At 56 I ride a bike most days and I surf year round. I feel it some days but I dread what would happen if I stopped.

Invest in a good carbon graphite paddle. More important than the quality of the board.

Based on what I see on the local river and spring runs you get a free paddle board when you have a knee replaced.

They're a lot of fun, we own two and my wife (41) and daughter (8) are out on them 2-3 times a week in the summer. Bonus for you old fogies: they're a good way to work on your balance, which as I understand it becomes more and more important in your dotage.

Good for your abs too. I'd only been on a SUP once prior to buying mine. I unwrapped it and headed out on a eight kilometre (five miles) paddle. Phew, I'd abs by the time I got back.

I have the Costco Body Glove inflatable and take it when we camp at the lake a few times a year. It's a good work out. I was actually a bit sore in my quads and lats after doing it more this trip than before as the water was so nice and each day was 90+ degrees. Great for working on your balance.

My dog will go for short trips somewhat reluctantly. If I got more into it I'd get a solid board. The inflatable will flex in chop and the heavier you are the worse that will be, but they are pretty cheap and a good way to get started.

Wife is 72, she kayaks. Does the stand up board and still rides her CRF150R and TTR125 through our woods. I keep the 4.5 miles of trails clear.
