Cash offer
I've been driving my 72 a bit lately, taking it up to a buddies house about 20 minutes away to help on a Gazebo build he's in the middle of.
He's in a pretty remote area on acreage within a few miles of the end of the road and entrance to a Navy communications base. Yesterday we were working away building roof sections and a newer black Ram pulls into his driveway and proceeds right on down to the garage we are working in. Two guys in the truck, the driver rolls down his window and my buddies German Shepard goes and investigates by putting his paws up on the truck and looking in at them (the Shepard is is very good size dog). the driver stays in the truck (good plan at that point) and says "Hey, sorry to bother you guys but I just had to ask about this beautiful car" as he's eyeballing my Targa. My buddy calls off the dog, the driver gets out and starts asking "what year?, original paint?, all stock?" And then he asks if I'd consider selling it? I said, nope! I'm not done with it yet, I have some plans for it. He continues to push, asks what if I offer you 40K in cash??? Not to be too judgemental, he was in a wrinkled old T-shirt, workout type shorts and looked like he just rolled out of bed that way... I said again no, it's not for sale. He asks what are your plans for it? I said it's likely going to get a bit of body work, paint and stay in the family, it will likely be my Son's someday. He said again, "I've got cash here and now, pulls out a huge wad of bills and says how about 50K cash as it sits?" I again said nope! He asked if I'd take his phone # in case I changed my mind? NOPE! Thanks for the offer, it's not for sale. He finally got back in the truck and left. That's a first for me, pretty bold driving onto someone's private property... damn near everyone up in that area is either armed or has a gun handy. I've had people in parking lots or at a gas station ask hey, would you consider selling your car? Never had anyone quite that aggressive, and never before had someone pull out that much cash and hold it out to me... My buddy was dumbfounded at what had just happened. Have you ever had that kind of thing happen to you?

I've had it happen with both the Carrera and my Toyota pickup. (I never saw a wad of bills, though, but definitely the aggressive ask.)
It's happened often enough that I think it's maybe a way to launder ill-gotten gains.

Actually, it has happened to me a few times.
I had a rare Defender 90 and, when they went from ordinary to cult status I got bombarded in DC all the time. When I sold it, early internet on Rover's North, I had a guy from Chicago call me and tell me he would beat the offer I accepted by $5k. I said no. He went into a freaking rage. Weird. Same now with the 1996 Land Cruiser - of course in a much less intrusive manner than Skip's episode.

I have a 3 car garage, and the main work bay is where I normally park the El Camino. To move the 911 over I pull the 911 out and park it on my driveway parking area up by the garage. Go the the Elky, and pull it into the spot where the 911 normally resides, and then pull the 911 into the work bay.
In the three minutes or so that took some guy pulled up in front of my house and approached the 911 still in the parking area of my house, on my property. He asked if it were for sale and I replied in my standard line: Not for any reasonable price. He said how about 20 grand. I said that is not a reasonable price, but insultingly low, I meant my price is over 100 grand not give away price. He took pictures and since I was home he sure knew where I lived. He said he would talk to his brother and he really likes the car. If some fool pays me 100 large, I will sell. People with 100K don't buy cars worth 50 to 60 grand. Now I think I will raise the price to 200K. When the 911 is parked in the garage, it is locked. I disconnected the DME relay for a month or so after that guy approached me. About once a month someone offers to buy my El Camino. They always try some insulting low ball offer like I am an idiot. Again not for sale for any reasonable price. If I sold it I have no idea what I would replace it with. I don't want a pickup like 1/3 the vehicles around here, and I sure ain't getting a SUV or minivan or generic econobox sedan.

Assuming your car (the 1972) is in decent shape, isn't it worth potentially a lot more than $50K, anyway?

![]() It is in great shape, and all the projects are done. It is no concours winner, but a really nice driver with kick ass air conditioning, rebuild engine and transmission and suspension. I really don't know the real value of it, and I likely need to research the value. I have agreed value insurance, and I might need to bump it up again. After 26 years, I am very bonded to it.

Missed an opportunity to rob, murder and bury that guy. He may have even had more than $50k on him.

One of the ladies I used to work with said he dad would not leave the house without 10, $100 bills that were not for spending. He just loved to flash and count through the grand and get to the smaller bills in the middle of the wad of money. And that was back in the 60s and 70s when a grand was a lot of money.

Lots of other gatherings, maybe he saw it, or one of his buddies told him about it so he came back looking. I was parked clear down by the garage, not easy to see through the landscaping and such from the road. And you are right Steve, mine's a true survivor, one respray with OEM paint, I have the original motor stored, original seats are stored, etc, etc. It's worth 50 at least even though she needs a bit of body work and new paint. And... it's not for sale, I'm not done having fun with it. ![]() ![]()

I would have told the guy to get the fk off the property right now, while he was doing the, "nice car," routine. The world is overrun with scumbags.
If someone pulled onto the property where I work on stuff uninvited like that, they would be greeted by me with arms crossed, pistol in one hand under bicep.

Did the wad of bills have "Monopoly" printed on them?
Or did they look like they were printed on a home PC printer? I imagine the DEA and FBI would have some interesting questions if you showed up at your bank to deposit that much cash. I can imagine some people who would carry that much cash and want to get rid of it (i.e. launder it) quickly - someone who would be acting excited, wiping his nose and sniffling a lot, or someone with a middle name of "the". BTW, I did have my garage door open yesterday when I was pulling a vacuum on my 911's A/C system and someone driving by in a car advertising a "mobile bodywork" company stopped to see if I was interested in selling my '87 3.2 coupe. I told him no and after we talked a bit more it became clear that he was looking for more of project car (i.e. lower price and needing more work). Nice enough guy, and I don't blame him - nothing ventured, nothing gained. It did, however, make me more attentive to double-locking my garage, and keeping another car parked in front of the garage bay door that has the Porsche in it. I was close enough to see, it was scrumptious American currency.
I didn't get good vibes though, my mind went to the "that's likely drug money" realm immediately. This is a very small town, most peeps around don't look like he does (not to be too judgemental about his appearance) or roll around with 50K in their Nike gym shorts. At least not in the 30 years I've caused havoc in this town. Glad the 3rd, or 4th "Not for sale" sunk in, I was also thinking of exit strategies if need be...

On the opening subject...it was a particularly offensive phone call, not asking, but telling me I was going to sell my car to him, that prompted me to contact Evren giving him a very much friend''s price on an original '72 911S coupe. I'd had my fun with the car, and was getting very pissed about the unwanted attention it brought from people who thought their money could buy anything. People I didn't like much.
