Residential HVAC
Can we really no longer get R22 Compressors?
Just got back from 12 days away, upstairs AC **** the bed. Guy was just here, says it's the compressor. If I have to switch refrigerant it means replacing even more ****.

Our system works well other than a slow leak, but it was installed in 1991. We're planning for a full replacement. Hopefully, our plans occur before the system gives up the ghost.

R22 is getting pricey and even if I could get the compressor the cost to refill the system is probably going to justify replacement anyway. I hate this crap.

You can find R22 compressors but by the time you buy it, get it installed and recharge with R22, you just bought a new outdoor unit.

My current system is R-22. I was prepared to do a complete changeover to the new R-410A when my compressor broke, but am now thinking ductless mini-split.
But my home is small single story 2/2 with "open" layout - so probably taylor made for a mini-split. Right now I'm nursing my existing system along as much as possible, but also saving up for a replacement. I can always put a window unit in temporarily to give myself some time when things go south. I already have the window units on hand - keep them for hurricane power outages and use with my generator.

And the price of R22 won't be doing anything but going up as it gets closer to unobtanium so if I need a recharge at some point n the future......

recover and refine your F22 and replace your compressor
switch to 407c a gas mix that requires an oil change but the gas is cheap but the old stuff in new stock still exists gas or compressor FIRST check the cap a 10 dollar cap will fix the non running compressor sometimes Last edited by nota; 07-13-2021 at 12:55 PM.. |

I had the same happen to mine a couple years ago.
Had to replace the whole works...not worth fixing the old one. I do have to say...the new one works much better and easier than the old one.

That's because the condenser coil is twice the size of the old one and the evaporator is bigger too! The other plus is the new ones are quieter than the old ones.

^^^ I was not very pleased about having to replace the old one. After living with it two seasons...I'm very happy with the new one.

Scott,
I just replaced both of my AC/Gas Furnace systems with 17 SEER 2 stage, 4 Ton and 3 Ton. $12K for everything. Maybe it is time to rip it out and replace. It is probably time. The same company is in Austin and Dallas.

I have 2 5 ton r22 units that are 20 + years old. Both have joined the union. With the age and cost of r22 they are not worth the repair. R438a is a no oil change replacement for r22..at apx $14 lb. Lots of variables in this mix..fix, modify and fix or replace whole heating/cooling units? Plus how sophisticated of a system do i want. Then you have to think about what refridgerant is being phased out..and what is the replacement going to be? R32? I have been quoted rape me prices for replacement of the system by the hvac thieves in town. |

Just had a 5ton compressor replaced yesterday.
Have not received a bill yet. They replaced the compressor instead of replacing the entire outside unit because they could find the parts. The entire unit was backordered. Can't wait to see the damage. gary |

Mine is an R-22 2.5 ton system and I was quoted approx. $5K to change everything out (outside condenser plus inside air handler) converting over to R-410A.
But like I said - I'm thinking ductless mini-split now. One reason is I don't like the location of the current outside condenser. It's in the middle of my back patio next to the house. Now that I have the patio enlarged and a canopy over it all, the hot air and noise are a nuisance. These mini-split outside units are very quiet - but I would probably re-locate it anyway while we're at it.

I installed the system myself (not something someone would want to do if they don't have good a/c tools, access to nitrogen, and a fair amount of a/c and electrical work experience), and it fuukin rocks out with its c**k out, even here in burnass TexASS. Let me know if you want specifics on which model the systems is, and so forth, Baz. BTW, the Mitsubishis carry a biggly price tag, but like with most things, one has to be willing to pay for quality, so even though it took some serious head games on my part, I'm so far glad I spent the extra coinage. Really snowflake? It hasn't even gotten hot yet. You might want to think about a cooler climate in which to live.

As far as "snowflake" goes, I work in aircraft hangers that are ten-plus degrees hotter inside than the outside ambient temp at the time (I do have the use of two window units with made-by-me, mobile ducts installed so can direct frosty air to certain spaces as needed), and haven't melted yet in many years, although I do shed about 3 pounds of water weight each work shift, so maybe that qualifies as melting. |

Sorry to hear about your luck Scott. Probably best that you are replacing the whole system. Smart thermostats are the thing these days and you may want one. Our dealer installed an ECOBEE thermostat that we hated. We had him come back and replace it with a stand-alone thermostat that didn’t require a working router and smart phone. With your knowledge of networks etc you may be fine with one, but we absolutely hated it. Just sayin’.

One note, on my large 4 ton unit, the line was fine. The smaller AC, they upsized the copper line. It wasn't a big deal.
