Red sun the last few mornings.

Today...I took a pic of the sun at 8 am.
It looked totally red...but the pic showed no red???

red is a tough color for digital cameras. And most digital cameras these days try to figure out what color things are supposed to be and automatically makes adjustments to the photo.

smoke, smog, dust, etc... will all make stuff in the sky red. The thicker the pollutant, the redder stuff will be. It will also be the most affected the lower it is in the sky (think sunrise and sunset or moonrise and moonset).

When there are crazy wild fires anywhere (the west coast comes to mind) then the folks that are getting hammered by the smoke may see a red sun in the middle of the day when the sun is overhead. But usually, smoke and dust isn't that thick, so it's when the sun or moon is near the horizon that they appear the most red because you're looking through a lot of atmosphere when they are low in the sky.

Was it a paint by numbers morning sky that looked so phony? Was dawn breaking everywhere, did you light a candle and curse the glare?

The good part of it is that the suns heat hasn't been as noticeable until around noon or later. The smoke holds it off until it's directly overhead.

It was just as red this am.....I tried once again for a pic.
Instead of my smartphone....I tried my Sony digital cyber shot camera.

Same result.....pic shows white...no red.

Too great a difference between the highlights and shadows in the picture for your camera/phone to expose properly. Reduce the exposure time enough and the sun should be red, although the shadows will be black and the overall exposure will be way too dark.

We've had intense smoke and falling ash may times over the years. Sometimes you can't even see the sun. I've never seen red, but orange many times. And all shades of dirty yellow. For now we have clear skies and it's hot.

It's just a matter of time before a big fire starts. Some of them take 3-4 months to completely control.
