One could make a case that today's cars are actually inviting distracted driving by design. Flat touch screens, steering wheel controls, etc. All require taking eyes off the road to operate...

How about you do something like this, you go to jail, immediately, no trial, for 15 yrs minimum, no parole possible, no time off for good behavior. You're in the slammer if you do this.

Aren't there some countries that have this sort of thing for drunk driving already?

They specifically let you run around with guns in the same Bill of Rights that aimed to stop the sort or kangaroo courts you long for.

I guess I don't see it as a 'kangaroo court' if you're caught doing the deed.

No need for court at all.

Why should 'society' need to spend money on a court trial if someone is caught killing someone else with their car?
The kid that hit the coach has no defense, IMO. Nothing he can say or do will bring that coach back to his family and friends. Stupid mistakes have to have consequences or they will never learn from them. Send him to jail and let him think about what he did for a good long time.
Until people realize there's a real penalty to be paid if you do something like this, they'll just continue to do it.

You mean like putting on make up, shaving or eating? People have always been distracted. It just got worse when cars had tape players and move on from there to the next distraction.

Tell ya what Greg,
I'm at the point when I see people driving with their heads buried in their phones, I blare the horn as a starting point.

Startled? Good. F$#% you!

Last week on 64 I had some girl texting behind me, tailgating, and using my car as a"carrot" so she could keep texting while keeping something in her sight. I slowed down to about 45 mph in a 70 mph zone to get her to pass. She never did, she had no idea she was going 45 in a 70mph zone. I finally pulled into the left lane, and hit the brakes to force her to pass in the right lane, blared the horn, pulled in behind her, horn blaring.

That woke her up.

Every so often, I get the urge to mount a semi or locomotive horn in my cargo carrier. Legal or not, IDNGAF. Show me the ebay deal!

We don't have to worry about cell phones. The automakers themselves are creating the distractions with their huge touch screens and other factory "tech".

This, and the fact that social media platforms, service providers and advertisers want to keep people engaged with their mobile devices as much as possible...no matter what else they may be doing at the time.

Also not helping matters are the opportunistic manufacturers who keep coming up with devices to keep that cell phone right in front of you while driving.

These things are just encouraging drivers to text, watch videos, read blogs, surf websites, make on-line purchases, etc. instead of paying attention to the road and traffic conditions.

LOL, I used to commute from south San Antonio to other side of Austin back in the late 90s. I saw all kinds of crazy stuff on IH35 going north. I’ve seen a woman pass me doing makeup, another reading a novel….as in novel up in front of her face buried into it and the kicker, she was passing me! I’ve seen a guys shaving, reading newspaper and the craziest was a guy with drum sticks jamming while driving, as in using both hands drumming on the steering wheel, the review mirror, the dash and the passenger window…full out jam! That’s beside the other stupid things like people coming to a complete stop in the middle lane, throw it in reverse because they missed the exit….this is on a 3 lane interstate highway!

Before their were cell phones their were other things that stupid people do while driving. Honestly their are too many safety devices keeping these idiots alive. I stay remove all the safety and let them kill them selves off.

I was sitting at a rail road crossing with traffic, the arms down, waiting for the passenger train to cross, when this, ugly fat broad was texting and drove around cars, went inbetween the gates and drove off. The train was about 100 feet from that arrogant cow and it was hauling ass. I heard its horn blairing, but the fat blob of grease ignored it. I would have been a shame if the train struck her...
