The latest and worst kind of shortage . Auto parts .
Certain things have been hard to source for months now, Im sure you have all heard about the modules, and lots of factory parts from dealers, have quite simply been on back order, with no future in sight .
Now, it is starting to get to the run of the mill consumeables . I just heard a rumor that our local Advance auto parts ran out of rotors, so I called them. No rumor, no rear rotors for Ford 150, transit vans, and he mentioned several other import models , that they have been out of stock on for a few weeks, with no signs of delivery any time soon . He also mentioned filters, he said their shelves are starting to look bare, and nothing on the pipeline . The story he gave was , all of the inventory is sitting in ships in ports in Ca, with no dock workers to make the magic happen . I have basically been through this whole mess unscathed, hope it stays that way .

And he would be right about the ships sitting, though they aren't in the harbor here. ![]()

Its not only sitting in ports but the overseas manufacturers are WAY behind because they don't have the staff... and second and third tier suppliers are having cashflow issues, dragging their feet as well.
Its gonna stay like this for at least another year. Good thing we single-source outsourced all the manufacturing overseas and ship via fragile supply chain systems to save a few bucks.

We can't get any 0w20 / 5w30 or 15w40 from our oil supplier. We have to source it from Carquest or Autozone. Our GMC pick ups come without Nav because they can't get any micro chips.

Ordered a rolling bridge jack for my 4 post lift in early May........still haven't gotten it.
Haven't had any trouble with parts as yet. Did a brake job on a 2500 silverado last week and they had all 4 calipers, rotors, and pads in stock (NAPA) even front shocks.

Domestic companies are contributing to the shortages too.
See for example article linked below about railroads. Cut headcount hugely in past decade to increase efficiency and profits, then cut more during 2020, now it is taking time to hire back to fill the positions they cut. https://wolfstreet.com/2021/07/22/after-slashing-33-of-their-workers-in-six-years-railroads-complain-about-labor-shortages-amid-uproar-from-shippers-over-slow-shipments/

I work for an automotive company that supplies engine gaskets to the OE and aftermarket. We are primarily an aftermarket company. We are measured by fill rate where the goal is 95% or better and $0 past due dollars (that is current orders that aren't filled).
Current fill rate is at 65% - largely due to purchased parts and raw material shortages. We also have a labor problem - not enough workers. The starting hourly rate was a little over $14/hr in January and 7 months later is $18.50 plus sign on bonus and more money after 12 months of employment. We are also losing people to either retirements or finding better jobs. We had a solid tool/die department and we lost 6 persons to retirement or better jobs. The short term solution is overtime and that has limits too. What you can't produce, the dollar amount of unfilled orders grows - and we are several million in past due. There is another problem that is happening. Vendors/ suppliers are prioritizing their customers. The high priority goes to the best customers in terms of either dollars and/or volume. The others get in line. It is the 80/20 rule. We are doing it and others are doing it to us. Of course you can move to the front of the line by either paying a premium or buying a larger order (even though you don't want it). Our focus is producing the most popular engine gasket sets. That is where the market, money and profit is. And we are having trouble doing that for the reason I stated. So if you are looking foe a product on a non- popular car or engine, you are going to have a problem The car aftermarket biz right now is off the charts and I don't see any improvement this year.

Sad but true, Fred.
I primarily sell aftermarket parts to auto repair shops and auto parts stores. It's the same story 90% of the time, the other 10% must have their head in the sand. It has been this for way months.

The rubber shortage has been taking hold and is about to flow into areas most people haven't even considered. I went to the golf course this morning to hit some range balls. The guy told me that they are being impacted by the lack of rubber. Balls ordered last year are just now showing up and balls ordered earlier this year won't ship until this fall. Grips are in short supply as well.

How does this exactly work? You look for balls on the tee box? Sorry, but that's BS. You look for balls in the fairway, while they are on the green? Sounds like more horse****.

I can tell you've never been on a golf course in your life. Here's an idea, check out a map of 9 or 18 holes sometime - you'll notice that the next tee is a short walk from the green, and there's plenty of overgrown real estate around those greens. Waiting for a bunch of foresomes to play through gives ample time to explore the surrounding out of bounds.

I just went to order a set of aftermarket wheels for my Superduty dually. Was going to get them around a month ago, but held off. As of two day ago, the price went up from $2,2305 to $2,889 in three weeks.

However, here it is. I hit the ball farther and more accurately than most, thus it gives me ample time between tee and green to look while I wait. Tee to green, green to tee, 2 times per hole. The bonus comes when you help out your pawdner...

If the OEs are serious about migrating the EVs, the market for engine gaskets will decline further than the 5%-7% decline it has been in for years. I see the rise in small cottage industries for rubber and paper gaskets. Head gaskets, not so much.
