Rat issue

I have been using my tractor the last few days and after fueling up I checked the oil and coolant. Dam rat chewed up my coolant cap and top of the reservoir. I’m picking up a new reservoir tomorrow but how do I deter these bastages? It’s usually park the tractor in my shed. I hate using rat poison because I have Horned Owls on my property and don’t want to kill them too. Any ideas out there?

goodnature rat trap, a little pricey but they REALLY work well. I loan mine out to the neighbors now that I do not have a problem anymore.

Squirt this around the tractor when you park it...

rat traps

I’ll try the wolf piss first. A lot cheaper then the good nature trap. But….. $169 is better then having the wiring destroyed by rats.

And weasels. They go into the burrows after the bastages. I have never seen a rat population dissappear as fast.
Getting them to show up might be a bit of a problem.

I tried several live-catch traps and none of them worked so I went to the old fashioned snap trap baited with a Slim Jim and that got every one of them.

The Slim Jim can be pressed onto the little prong so it can't be removed without triggering the snap.

I also set up a trail camera so I could get an idea of how many I was dealing with.

I have one of these and they are brutally efficient.

Mr Kat was doing his best and would often bring me their carcasses but some of the rats were huge...

I have two cats but they are garage cats. My tractor is parked in my wood shed that doesn’t have a door. I’m going to try the water in the bucket method. I’ll report back.

I just saw about 2 days ago an add on Linked In of all places for a rodent trap that you put on the top of standard 5 gallon bucket like you might get a the home dep. The trap was a lid with a ramp, you spread some bait like peanut butter and whatever on the underside of this lid. The lid had like a trap door that only opened one way (down). Varmint goes up ramp, steps on trap door area, once it gets too far onto the door it opens down the slams back shut. If I had only know this question would come up on here I would have been more alert to recall the name/make. Maybe do a search on linkedin??
