What a great trip.

I should have mentioned Delamar Dry Lake. We did some US testing there in 2013 and it was spectacular.

The drive there is really neat: Head towards Alamo, NV and then turn on the dirt road, which you can see on the screen shot below. The dirt road goes through some narrows passages but is very accessible.

You can also leave headed north to Route 93. We stayed at a hotel in Caliente, which is on the map below and also in an RV at the dry lake.
