The price of lumber these days!!

Last week I bought half a dozen 1x2s for $7.99 each. They were half that a year ago. I went back this morning to buy a few more and the price was $12.99 each! The lumber guy said they get a price increase the first of every month. I pointed out that it's still March 31 and the price on the tag is $7.99. He sold them to me at $7.99 but tomorrow the price goes up 50% - to $12.99.

We've noticed a sharp increase as well. Inch and an eighth OSB flooring was 40 something a sheet a year or year and a half ago. Just paid $102 per sheet at the same store a week ago...

Ouch. This is going to impact home building prices significantly.

$102!!!

I thought it was bad for Lowes to want $85 for a sheet of 3/4 furniture grade (crap - the veneer is as thin as paper).

Hot Rolled Coil (steel) has also been on a sustained and dramatic upswing.

$486 per ton in August, 2020.

Hit $1,310/ton today.

Who would think that printing 6T new money in a year would ever have an inflationary impact? I feel sorry for those building a house this year

Lots of items here in construction materials 2x or more what they were just 1-2 yrs ago. Been in the industry for a long time and it’s just crazy now.

A lot of it has to do with industries closing last year and all the stock was sold off. Now no one has anything to ship and they have jacked the price of everything. Supply/demand.

Local developers here have stopped, some in mid-build, on their new homes. The costs of materials have reached a point where there isn’t any margin to make a profit. The people in the market to buy can’t afford what they are now costing to buy. The used home inventory is pretty much non existent here with homes that do hit the market usually ending up selling over asking within 24hrs. No worries though, inflation IS coming and it’ll self correct and the boon will end. That’s according to my crystal ball.

I didn't even pay attention to the prices when my son and I were buying stuff to build his bed. I just bought it and moved on. All I know is the song kept telling me I was savin big money.

I am about to place a large order to restock my staking materials, it never dawned on my I am about to reach down to get the soap.

From what I was told the price increase is due to insane demand. In Florida, for example, we cannot sell houses fast enough, therefore we are building them as fast as we can which = huge lumber demands.

Plywood use to be 39.99 just a few months ago. Now, its 56.99. My projects are bid out 6-9 months out. With this increase, I have to break them the bad news and up the price so we don't take it in the shorts. Everything has gone up. Is inflation here yet?

I work for a mid Atlantic builder and prices for everything has gone crazy high, plus delays/shortages. Add housing demand and permits / developmental costs/delays and it gets really crazy.

As mentioned, builders are slowing down production and even sales.

Good thing the fence got replaced just in time before further shrinkage.

10 months ago here it was because of massive tornados. You couldn’t get shingles at all, lucky to find a contractor who wasn’t booked up. That made sense.
Last summer there was a pressure treated lumber shortage. Now there’s plenty of PT, but a shortage of construction lumber. It’s nuts.

I am so dumb. During the whole winter, we were goofing off riding our bikes, hanging out. My boys are old enough to help with building the second story deck. We started about two weeks ago. The decking itself is Ipe to match the lower deck. If I bought the materials 3 months ago, it would have been $ 1.50 less a lin' foot. That's 1000 lin', 1500 bucks difference.
