More Rot Repair and Window Sealing
The thing that instigated my trellis repair:
https://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1164905-repair-rotted-beam.html was that the lady found some rot along the windows and when I walked on the trellis my foot went through a joist. Now trellis is solid I address the original issue. Dug out a bunch of rotted cedar all along the front of the house under the windows. Appears that the seal between the trim and the glass failed, the stuff turned hard and chalky, which let water run down the back. ![]() Dug out the rot, put fans on it. Tried out a product "abatron" with a thin liquid epoxy followed by this epoxy dough. Great stuff but I ran out. Tried jb weld premium epoxy wood putty, same thing a two part epoxy dough that you press into the sticky saturated mank hole. ![]() Made new trim with my grandpas table saw. ![]() Sanded with a 1/4 sheet sander. Question was how to seal the glass to the trim. Everything on line recommended 'glazing putty' which is the old latex stuff you use to set single pane glass in frames. I was convinced my situation was different. I called DAP and they insisted the only product for what I needed was their latex glazing putty. Luckily I called a local window installer. They said I need a high quality exterior caulk, my windows are called 'direct set'. They got me the name of the product they use: Dymonic FC. Called local tremco sales he pointed me at "Colorado Steel Sash" so I drove there to buy a cartridge. I asked the guy "whats with the name? why not something obvious like "seattle window repair supply". Hes like "Colorado because thats where we were founded in 1908, and "steel sash" because it was the marketing name we gave glazing putty when we invented it!" How cool is that? And he agreed glazing putty is utterly obsolete today. Showed me pictures of the crews they are supplying to reseal all the windows on a tall office building nearby. Oh, and then he comped me the cartridge. Lets hope this dymonic fc holds up. ![]() I applied, tooled it, waited 5 days and it was barely hard enough to cut the extra stuff free. ![]() Finally got the panels painted, actually taped and painted the trim yesterday morning. ![]() Man everything sure looks bad when its getting sanded for paint. Right up until the moment I got the primer on that lady was insisting we are going to need to hire someone to replace the entire front of our house, the windows, everything. Next step is to measure out for sheet metal flashing to cover the trellis beams but I need a vacation for now. |

I sure have a giant case of eave envy. Who designs a house without eaves? Stupid architects.
