New clock

Wife bought clock on sale at Walmart.
I hate roman numerals because they make me think.
But this one just seems off x2.

Man, that is sooooo wrong. Must be a new way of displaying Roman Numerals. Kind of like the new math or something.

pwd72s 08-23-2021 03:53 PM

I've always been curious about 4

Is it IV, IIII, or both???

Sure looks like they got 7 wrong though...

Evans, Marv 08-23-2021 03:54 PM

Designed by a recent graduate.

Bill Douglas 08-23-2021 04:06 PM

I'd be alarmed by that.

stevej37 08-23-2021 04:21 PM

It must be correct.
One can clearly see that it's a Greenwich Clock.:D

Sooner or later 08-23-2021 04:22 PM

A lot of clocks use IIII.
IIV is definitely not 7.

trj911 08-23-2021 04:23 PM

And the 7 is showing IIV. There is no such number.

Aurel 08-23-2021 04:30 PM

Chinese and roman numbers don’t mix well :D.

+1
Upside down “Vs” and II(upside down V) for 7? Yeaaaah!

Aurel 08-23-2021 04:40 PM

The lack of logic is astounding: if VIII is 8, which they have correct, then why in hell would 7 be IIV?
The IIII is just cute, like let us reinvent Roman numbers :).

stevej37 08-23-2021 04:45 PM

The Romans had it wrong.
Glad we found out.

Krazy, but look at a Rolex roman numerals dial...they use IIII instead of IV.

Nope..not a trench coat. Check it out. This one's on sale...and the deal clincher, they'll toss in a free sizing to your wrist. But hey..they did the 7 right. ;)

Has it ever occurred to anyone else, that kids born in the digital age have no idea what you are saying with "it's a quarter to five" or "half past six"?

With regard to that Walmart clock, I can see "Happy hour from 5 to something like 3"?

masraum 08-23-2021 06:52 PM

genius. That's right up there with this one.

To me it shows ignorance of the meaning of "arabic numerals"...not necessarily bigotry, just a lack of education.

Kind of like college students lining up to sign a petition to ban hydrogen dioxide.

One of the standard cognitive tests given to this old geezer is to hand me a paper & pen, ask me to draw a clock showing the time of eight-twenty.

Wish I was artistic...I'm tempted to draw a casio digital face showing 8:20:00.

Lack of education is often a breeding ground for bigotry, IMO.
whoever designed that clock needs more schooltime.

Ignorance, yes, but I suspect that at least a portion of the folks that said "no" did it because of the "Arabic" tag without thinking or understanding.

BK911 08-24-2021 06:58 AM

My first thought was no.
But I will never admit it!

herr_oberst 08-24-2021 07:43 AM

One other problem I have with those numerals, is that the thick and thin strokes on the "V" aren't consistent. At first I thought, a-ha! Here's the problem, the printing negatives for the V VI and VII got flopped in prepress. Then I came to my senses and remembered that this is 2021 and no one strips negs for prepress anymore, it's all digital.

Which makes it even more confusing as to how they got this so very very wrong.

Are the Chinese effing with us? Having a laugh at our expense?

Zeke 08-24-2021 09:49 AM

Clocks with Roman numerals traditionally have the bases of the numerals towards the center making the 5,6,7 clearly upside down, IIII was used not only to satisfy the confusion, but to balance the opposing numeral VIII which is, of course, III^ to the viewer.

Do you mean dihydrogen monoxide (H2O)?
